My SPS tank

Does anyone know why a higher alk causes problems using the zeo method and/or probidio method. I would think it may have something to do with the super low nutrients, but it would be good to know.
I was going to research it more before answering, but here's the gist of it. Zeolites function by ion exchange. That is, they absorb a charged particle and release a similarly charged particle. Not all zeolites are the same, some have an affinity for certain ions while others prefer different ions. The ZEOlites used in the ZEOvit method have a particular affinity for ammonium ions, and in exchange they release sodium and potassium. The ammonium absorbed onto the ZEOlith rock is used as nutrition for bacteria that are kept in relative high concentraion.

When carbonate hardness (alkalinity) is increased above 8 dKH, the ZEOliths begin to function differently in that they cannot absorb the ammonium as effectively. This results in a nutrient spike that can shock and harm corals that have adapted to a nutrient-poor environment. I'll read more about this and update if necessary, but I'm pretty sure this is accurate.

After all the "hard facts" some pics to relax :)

Where are the pumps ?

I have no pumps....Just kidding, they are hidden.

Iwan,

In the 2nd picture in your last post it looks as though you are using a t-5 fixture that mounts to the top of your tank with minimal clearance. You mentioned ATI bulbs. Is this also an ATI fixture? The top of the line ATI power module here in the states is not available with legs to mount to the tank, it must be hung from the ceiling. Can you give us the details on your light fixture?

I use an ATI powermodule and one ATI sunpower. The lamps are hung up with rope tractions. The distance of the lamps to the surface of the water is minimal.

What is attached to the top lip along the side of the tank?

That's a cooling system (fan)

Iwan,
You've done it again!! Great looking tank! I'm a big fan since your last tank. Amazing colors! This is what we all strive for, IMO. Heck, i even had your homepage bookmark from the last tank thread. Keep it up!!

Iwan, glad to see you are back from the dead :D. As for the sump, I do think Iwan has one, he owns a ATI 250.

Now just one thing is missing, a picture from your sump :-)

Regards

Here a pic from the sump.
It's a old pic with the old skimmer. Since a year an ATI BM 250 is running.

Iwan,

Why did you chose Balling ?

In my opinion, a calcium reactor is more easy to handle and to achieve good levels of ca and ra

We want some new pics! :D

Iwan, do you still use "Coral Dust" daily for feeding the SPS? Is it a manufactured food? Who makes it? Also I would like to know what kind of salt mix you use. Thank you. :)
