I Made my frame for a 50 gallon tank (36x18) stand. I used 2x4s and deck screws than sealed with 2 coats of kilz paint followed by 2 coats of oil based enamel for durability. I havent gotten around to skinning it yet cause im afraid of ruining my progress so far. lol, anyway here is the stand:

Whats everyone think so far? If the stand turns out perfect i may ditch the all glass tank and have aquarium obssessed or miralces make me a tank worthy of the stand.

Oh, i also made the stand 3 feet tall so im not strugging for cabinet access. Some of the equipment ordered and what i have so far is a tunze return pump, vortech mp40, bubble king mini 160, aquactinics tx5, 20 gallon high tank im making the sump out of and thats pretty much i think.

Looks great from my house!

If you are planning on putting another coat of paint on it, take some sort of putty and fill in those screw holes.

Personally I would just flake the paint off the screw heads, use a putty knife to slop some regular drywall spackle into it, and sand it flat with 120 grit after the spackle dries.

Also consider using satin or semi-gloss--- from what I can tell, the paint is glossy. Over time you won't really like that. Satin and semi-gloss will not show scratches and wear/tear nearly as much, and they still have a silky smooth texture that repels water (unlike the eggshell and flat sheens). I'm very partial to satin, especially on a white color.

You can topcoat over with any sheen you want, btw, the only thing that effects the sheen is what the last coat you used was.

I wast worried about the screw holes cause i wanted to close it in with some nice oak. A few recommended the enamel gloss cause it was durable, i just want something to wipe spills easily from when im messing with the skimmer and sump.

That stand looks like it's built like a tank. I'm sure it's more than adequate for your needs.

It looks great, you shouldnt have any issues with that stand. What are you planning on skinning it with? (or did you say and I missed it?)

You will never see the screws once you skin it anyway right?

In that case, I wouldn't worry about the screws anyhow. Sorry about that---

As for the gloss, really it's only a matter of choice. The semi-gloss and satin are pretty easy to keep clean as well. The gloss tends to show more wear since it reflects so much light, but it's all personal taste.

It's the dull/flat/eggshell sheens that are hideous for staining and durability.
