my tang has ich, and i am just now setting up a QT tank. should i put him in the new tank with a low salinity and copper? or try some reef safe chemicals? the ammonia is about .1 in the tank now, but i dont know what to do when it starts getting higher? what would be my best bet to help him fight the ich?

How bad is the ich? Is the fish feeding? You have .1 ammonia in your display tank? Thats why the fish is showing ICH.

no, sorry. i have .1 ammonia in my new QT tank. the ich is pretty bad, but he is still eating like crazy. i hope he will fight it off.

You should start off with water from your display..you will need to do frequent water changes to keep water quality good..I change the water in my qt everyday
Fish cannot fight off ich, you need to remove the fish and treat it

OK I know this goes against popular line of thinking but if the fish has specks and is eating and seems normal... I would keep him in the main tank. Keep water quality up and feed healthy foods. I bet there is a big percentage of fish keepers who have tnags with ICH that dont do anything and the fish is going to live a long healthy life. I have tried low salinity several times and for whatever reason it never takes out the ICH completly... I put the fish back and it shows a few spots later on. One tang of mine is 2 years with showing a ICH spot or two over that time.

Just my 2 cents.

i will try that for the next day, but if it gets worse, i will put medicine in the tank. i am just really nervous and scared because it is my new black tang.:) I usually just let them fight it off and it works unless it is a really bad case, but in this case i just dont know.

Should I put him in my 24 hr. old QT tank that has a low salinity and copper and high oxygen levels, or leave him in the main tank that has been dosed with Kick-ich. The ammonia level is either .1 or less for NOW, it will most likely rise by the next morning and I will have to do another water change. I really CAN'T loose this fish. I will take any advice given.

Thanks

My 155g tank has Ich and Marine Velvet and I lost 4 fish before I was able to pull out my 4 Tangs and QT them. They've been in there for about 3 weeks and eating well. I am treating with copper and slightly (I do mean slightly) lower salt level (about 1.017) and doing FW dips if they seem bad. I've only had to dip them once and the Ich seems to have gone away, but I'll keep the main tank fallow for 8 weeks to rid the parasite. I've got some cleaner shrimp in the main tank with other cleaners so that along with good WC's should help out.

If I were you, IMO, I would keep your PWC's in your WT frequent, like once every other day. Don't let those levels get out of wack otherwise that $300 fish is a goner.

Was I close onthe price?

HTH

Please use either Hypo or copper. PH drops during Hypo and copper becomes VERY toxic in a low PH
Like stated above, you can lower Salinity to around 1.018 or so with copper but I would not go any lower.
It is not necessary to use both copper and Hypo, each will work on its own

$300? Now I don't feel so bad about that $220 Angel I put a deposit on Sat;)

Yeah, thought so. A very rare Tang, plus they are hard to keep. Did you get that at your LFS or online? If LFS, do they stock exotic fish like that alot?

Interesting to see how other LFS's run their businesses and what the demand is in that area.

Good luck with the QTing of the Tang. Now how the heck would one tell if their black Tang had black ich?

LOL

haha, thats true. i sure am glad its regular ich. they are really as easy as a yellow tang, just EXTREMELY RARE!! i bought it from zemuron114 on rc who is in hawaii. but yes, my lfs does stock exotic fish alot. that is what they specialize in. so you would recommend doing water changes every day to keep the ammonia down? also, will amonia detox made by kent marine help with locking it up?

How big is the QT again? I've got a 20g with 4 tangs in it and I change every other day. I think that would be a good schedule for you at first, then after a couple of weeks, look at the levels after 2 days and see if you can go a 3rd. I would also get rid of any bio-wheel ont he filter or carbon bag filter as they will suck out the medicine (the carbon bag will, not the wheel). Replace the wheel witha sponge that's been sitting in your sump for a week or so, that will help keep the ammonia down. I wouldn't add chemicals to the QTto try to balance the levels. It's easier doing PWC's than monitoring levels with chemicals. Plus the tang will be stressed already with the move and all. Be sure there is nothing porous in the tank. Don't give the parasites anyplace to hang out if not on the fish. Also try to keep lighting to a minimum. Beside the natural sunlight in my living room, I only turn the flourecent lights on for about an hour at night, but I do keep it next to my big tank so it does get some light from the main tank.

the tank is a 29 gallon. the only thing i have on there is a powerhead, air pump, and a heater. i put some pvc pipe in there for him to hide in. the only light is the light from the windows which isnt much. i only added about 10 gallons of established water, the rest was freshly made saltwater. should i still do what you said or maybe do one once or twice a day until the ammonia stops rising? i am just worried that he will be fine when i go to bed, and then i wake up in the morning and he is dead because the ammonia has risen ALOT.

Do daily WC's until the ammonia has settled down. He'll be fine overnight. If he dies, it won't be from high ammonia. Just keep doing PWC's (about 5 -10g max) a day until the ammonia drops. Plus use fresh sw mix when replacing.
