It's only taken me about 8 years, but I finally figured it out -- Don't be afraid of a little algae. Algae = nutrients in the water column, and everyone and everything benefits from nutrients. Too many nutrients are obviously bad, but some are good.
About 2 months ago I decided to go from an under-stocked, under-fed, and over filtered talk to an aggressively-fed, aggressively-stocked, and mostly self-cleaned tank...
Within a few days I started seeing improvements, especially in my SPS. Polyp extension and coloring both improved. I have coralline growing for the first time ever, and algae never reached "problematic" status.
It's nice to see things thriving, rather than just not dying.
Blah... Blah... Blah... Blah... post the dang pictures already, right?
