Two problems:

1) recurring cyano. I have experience with dealing with cyano. I have done lights out, vacuum, water changes, cut feeding, increase flow, chemiclean, etc. I have a patch that doesn't give up. Even if I beat it, it comes back. It's not hurting anything but it's like a turd in a punch bowl.

2) biofilm. I am having that famous biofilm on the water surface, but more severe. Aside from standard film there are white "chunks" of slime mixed with it. It's almost like an allergy-infested gnome is sneezing in my tank while I am gone.

Anyone have some suggestions?

Sounds like you may need some more flow. How much flow do you have? You also need to have surface agitation.

I do have quite a bit of surface agitation, you you may be right about flow. I am pushing about 600gph through my return and two tunze turbelle nanostreams at about 1100 gph each. So combined about 2500-2800gph ish total

Well it seems that you have a decent amount of flow. Maybe you can redirect the flow to the cyano. Also do you have an overflow box? That should skim the surface and remove the film, so I'm not sure how to help you there. Sometimes cyano just needs some time to clear up.

Well

The First thing that comes to mind is Over Feeding..

Do you have any snails / hermits of so how many.

What type of filtration.. If your getting film on the water there is obviously no surface skimming.

Lighting type and Hours you run them could also effect the issues your having..

Targeting the nitrates is prob where you need to be going.. You can do this by reducing food. Increase surface skimming or add some type of surface skimmer . (not sure what filtration you have) Change out filter media daily while increasing tank flow to keep stuff suspended so filtration can pick it up.. Again back to filtration methods.

Hope this helps

I do have an overflow box. Just doesn't seem to be capturing the biofilm. I'll try to reposition my powerheads so maybe it will encourage surface skimming. I also am running a skimmer and chaeto/fuge. I change filter socks about every week.

I have an AI Hydra 52 HD. I'm running blues and whites at about 40% with no reds. I run them for about 6 hours at this intensity and with an hour ramp on/off.

I have been feeding pemysis pellets (probably about 10 pellets) once per day. Sometimes I will feed frozen and when I do I feed a piece that's about the size of a green pea. I have 6 trochus, 3 margarita, 3 nassarius, and 3 hermits. Once every other week I will target feed my coral. I do this the day before my 30% water change.

I've battled the film. Only way to fix for me is to find out what's cutting my flow rate in the sump. Usually the media basket.
