Got a call from my father ,early this morning, that the display tank was half full of water and water was all over the shop. He had stopped by to see the progress I had made on laying some tile(we are remodeling.) Got to the shop and it was a third low with water leaking. Removed everything and looks like it all will be fine.
No loss to fish or coral. I was fortunate to have a lot of room in a coral system in the back that we were getting ready to relocate. It was mostly empty but still running. We were able to remove everything, clean up and still open on time with nothing worse for the wear. The tank was 48"x48"x24" (about 10 years old) and it looks like it broke right in the middle. It made a X with one leg missing or a y like crack if you'd rather. It looks like the stand may have shifted/bowed. The tank was supported by a full bottom and rested on a sheet of Styrofoam without the trim touching. If it had broke with a open stand and tank just being supported by the perimeter it would probably have been much worse. I feel fortunate because it could HAVE been MUCH worse.

Now I've always wanted to do a tank that was 72"x36"x24" but was viewed through the 36" end and make a long chasm. I guess the opportunity has arrived.

Whew, just in time........you are one unlucky/lucky man...........Hope everything works out.
Great looking tank!

you wanna set me up with a wicked frag pack?

You are so lucky to have been there in time. The tank is replaceable but livestock is not. let us know how you make your next tank.

Glad it was caught it in time to save all the livestock Dave. Hate to hear you lost the tank.

That is amazing that everything survived. I would be thanking my father any way I could. The idea for the new tank sounds awesome.

Oh nooooooooo! What a beautiful display to loose. Hope your able keep everything else going while you rebuild. Love the depthy look of that 48x48 though.

Hate to hear that, Dave. Good luck with the new oppurtunity.

I may be in to see you guys soon. It'll be a pity that that tank won't be there drawing attention...

The lucky part was that I had changed the lighting schedule to come on later in the day so the exposed corals were not cooking under the five 400w halides. That would have gotten real ugly real fast.

I appreciate all the concern.

When I saw the thread starter I freaked, damn glad you caught it. Can't bare two heros lost in the same month.

Nice corals. Glad you saved them all.

This seems like it is not the 1st time I have read about bottoms of glass tanks cracking when being supported this way. I think they are designed to rest on the outer trim.

Wow, that is really ruff, your tank is accually my desktop on my computer. I really loved it. I am glad to see you were able to save your livestock.

Your new idea sounds really cool, I wanted to try the same with a 29 gallon planted tank, but never got around to it.

May tomorrow bring bigger and better things :).

Whew:eek1:

I read the title of the post and just about S*^# myself!!!!

I am really happy to hear that as of now everything is ok.

This could be a great way to upgrade to what you really want. The interesting thing will be how small everything becomes once you make the transfer!

I have a friend whose new 300 gallon Oceanic leaked, he ended up losing about 2-3 colonies, but for the most part everthing ultimately did well. The funny thing is Oceanic was pretty stupid about sticking with their gaureentee with questions like

"How do we know if it is leaking if there is no water in it"

Stupid!

Good luck with everything.

Your 'temp' tank looks 100X better than my display tank! I'm sorry to hear about your semi cube. It was an inspiration to me when I set up mine.
Are you going to go bigger?

Yeah, it re-emphasizes how large the corals were in the new display.

Looks great, too.

Couldn't agree more.
What would I aspire to, then?

That sucks dave.

That was easily the nicest tank that I have ever seen in person.

Get on with rebuilding bigger and better!!!!!!

P.S. we still need to square up on that copper power you sent me and the fish are still alive and kicking thanks to you and your help!
