My Tank Mod

We all had to start somewhere in this hobby and there were some things that we wish we knew before we ever started it. It would have saved me a lot of money and heartache if I had known what I now know. I was into koi before switching to saltwater and had gone through multiple nano tanks without an overflow before finally purchasing a used "reef-ready" aquarium in the bay area. Years have past before I realized that my reef-ready aquarium was way less than perfect. The truvu reef-ready tanks had 2 small openings on top which blocked pretty much most of the good light. I did not understand the reasoning behind an open rock work and had the pile of rocks look like everyone else. Tank looked like a fruit stand after placing corals. Over time detritus got trapped in the pile o' rocks and the tank goes into a full blown algae bloom. Algae would grow in back and it was difficult to clean behind the rock work because most of the top is covered by acrylic. The overflow plumbing was 1", easily clogs if there were bigger particles. The tank bowed a little and both overflows and built in dry boxes were taking too much real estate inside the tank. Here was how it looked like before. It was also before I discovered "gfo" and 20k radiums.

We moved from Natomas to Roseville and I wanted to get rid of the tank but John at yr said I would likely not get anything close to what I originally paid for it so I decided to incorporate it in my system by just adding boulders of live rock I already had. After a year, it also became hard to clean the detritus that built up on the bottom because most of the rock are in the way and I decided to get rid of the rock which I sold to multiple local reefers.

I decided to make it a display tank again and all the issues I had before started to surface again. It was difficult to clean the back and I now have to clean 2 display tanks. No good.

A week before the Super Bowl, one of the overflow clogged with the 1" piping so I had to tear it down. I transferred everything between my 300gallon display and my frag tank. I then drained it and loaded the tank to be delivered to Jeff (Ann). I told him that I hated this tank so much. I asked if he could hack it in half and turn it into a frag tank which he agreed. I also wanted him to redo the top and redo the overflow holes to accommodate a 1.5" bulkhead. He began work a week ago.

He put the tank on its side to remove the top. You can see I dremeled the top to put in the boulder rocks.

He drilled a hole to put the router bit in to cut the top.

You could see the bow in the tank after removing the top.

Here is where he chopped it.

Here is where it sit today. Almost there. It is now 14" high which is easier to manage and I won't need to purchase a more powerful tunze to provide flow.

He said it will be ready in a couple of days. I am so excited! He's been sending me pictures. I don't hate the tank any more. Putting mostly clams and lps on it because I can't put it in the main display. I have this guy in the main display. I have nothing but acros and monti in the display. Sorry pic not too good.

I picked up the tank at your reef today. I met there with Jeff. Anthony was there too. I am very happy with it. Even John at your reef liked it too. I am plumbing this next week.

Very nice Glenn, when it comes to acrylic I think Jeff could even teach TAP plastics a thing or 2. Did you guys ever make the look down box?

Impressive work and well thought out. Your reefing experience is really paying off. We all go through the same learning curve.......and I am not nearly to the point as you are.

Thanks for the complement. I ended up getting the courage to battle the weather so I went and got two 1.5" bulkheads today. I really could not wait to plumb this thing. My 300gallon display uses two 2" drains and so is my frag tank. This one I am really happy to have increased the drains to 1.5". I also got elos omega amino since I was running out of supply.

I already had the tank in place when I got it yesterday. I had to remove the plywood and widen the holes to make room for the larger bulkheads.

Jeff drilled a hole where my return was. I barely got it in but it is in.

How do I know I am a reef junkie? When I was about to go to home depot for plumbing parts I decided to check out my garage to see what parts I already had. Well I had enough elbows and PVC flex tubing to make it work. It is now plumbed together, just letting it dry. Reef Junkie I tell ya.

I have not rinsed the tank yet. I took out most of the residue with a rag and warm water. I had been busy with getting things back in place. I will rinse it tomorrow (Sunday) with vinegar and tap water then fill it up with tap water just before it reach the overflow and empty it out a few times. I am using the python hose so adding and removing water is a breeze. I am all over the place today. I just got done replacing all of my ro/di filters in my garage. Tomorrow I will work on the 2 canopies and install lighting. The thing will probably have water by tomorrow if time permits. I am sure my wife will nag on me regarding the smell of the drying pvc cement tomorrow.
