So here is my current system and at the bottom are my plans for my “last” big tank.

in 55 gal bow front, SCWD feeds water with u-type overflow box and sponge type filter in overflow.
60-75 lbs LR
small yellow tang
small cowfish
3 cromies
2 fire fish
1 mandarin
1 small clown
10 BL hermit crabs
5 nassaris snails
3-maji jet 1200
3 inch sand bed, arrogate and live sand mix

In 30 gal tall
30 Lbs LR
med fox face
lawnmower blenny
2 damsels
1 very small pink fish maybe 1/2 inch
1 cromie
7 BL hermit crabs
3 snails
2-maji jet 1200

Fuge
100 GPH or less flow
20 gallon fuge
4-5 inch live mud and sand mix
40 lbs LR
tons of pods you can see them all over!
cheto alge and red macro algae (don't know name but the good stuff)
5 snails
1 koralin the one size up from nano

Sump
20 gallon-about 10-15 gallon of water
2-sock filters
baffle
sea clone skimmer, need a new skimmer bad. but it is skimming a half cup a day. 400watt heater Theo.
bubble trap
2 return pumps-mag 5 for 55 and JBJ power head for 30. I know i need more flow.

Have an ATO from auto top off.com with 2 float switches, one for emergency. connected to 5 gallon kal make up water i go every other fresh then kal.

Use RODI water only I have a 5 stage filter with a booster pump and TDS meter.

with a carbon and phos reactor from BRS.

also I run a rena box filter that i had for fresh water but changed out the media and use for salt. Thinking of getting rid of it or just use on 10 gallon QT tank.

LIGHTING-

on 55-
odyssey fixture 1 250 watt MH, 2 65 watt antics, 4 led night light with night light blue LED strip on top.

on 30-
odyssey fixture 1 150 watt MH powered by ice cap ballast, 2 65 watt antics, 4 led night light with night light blue LED strip on top.

Controller-

RK2...
Antics-10 AM-9PM
MH 11:00 am-5:45
night and fuge-9PM-10AM
working on linking to computer

skimmer-24/7

power heads oscillating side to side in each tank.

temp- set at 75.5 hits 76 in the day with lights

1/2 HP flow through chiller.
UV- 20 min on 20 min off, 9 watt
PH-8.3-8.0

every day
morning feed-10:30am mysis shrimp ( I can feed my cow fish and cromies by hand)

trigger pods feed

with photo plankton

night time
5:30pm mysis shrimp.

every 2 weeks
change 30 gallons of water with Instant ocean. in a 45 gal Brute container. use to use oceanic but the CAl was way to high!

My next system plans-

From now I only want to buy items that will support my next system.155-210 gallon in wall bow front with 75-100 gallon sump and 50-75 gallon fuge. Tops 350 gallon system or less.

I like the TOTM in August 2008 it has no pumps or power heads…I would like to do the same in my tank with the aquascape of Nov 2007 TOTM…I like how the rock is lifted off the bottom. Also I am looking into the idea of overflowing across the entire back or a section of back of the tank. This will eliminate overflow boxes…..still looking at more ideas and want to do it right the first time.

What I am looking for-

-Good skimmer-rated for 350gal-400gal that has a collection cup drain and carbon, need to do more research any suggestions?

-50-75 gallon fuge, i have made mine out of a plastic storage container but it bowed from the water weight, I still use it but worried of a break.
-controller that is PH, temp, redox, send texts to phone when problems occur. need to do more research.

-155-210 gallon bow....still looking at glass and acrylic...i don't like scratches...but i don't want leaks or broken glass. Need to wait until moved into new house in 6 months to a year.

-Maybe a 30-50 gallon frag tank….

-would like to check into automatic water change, or make my own with solenoids and valves....

-battery back up system

-CAl reactor- not really needed yet, my water changes replace the cal my tank takes now.

The overall goal of the system is to make it so that i can house any type of coral/ animal with no more than a few hours per week of work. I still have a lot of research and learning to do so in the mean time I'll be doing a lot of reading and listening.

Thanks for reading. Let me know your suggestions…looking at skimmers now…looking at euro reef, precision marine, warner marine, aqua-C and AMS… what do you think of my tank idea?

Great post. I confess I haven't read it all, but having a well thought out plan is an excellent start. Right off the bat, don't bother with any hermits that have blue legs. They are more aggressive and are likely to kill other critters for their shells or take bites of things that aren't quite dead yet. In fact, if the alleged Scarlet Reef hermit doesn't have smooth legs (no spikes, protruberances or hairs), I wouldn't pay money for it or add it to my tank. I do have some yellow tip hermits and other dwarf hermit which are ok.

Once you get some corals going you won't have to worry about your calcium being too high.

Your lighting plans are timid but I'm the only one in the club with 400w halides.

My opinion - skim or have dead / poor corals. Get the biggest one you can afford.

Water changes will not take the place of supplemental CA / Alkalinity / Magnesium additions unless you're changing every day or two which is ridiculous.

IMHO, you can't do away with pumps or powerheads if you are growing sps. They require significant flow over their tissues for proper metabolism and growth.

Vary your foods. I feed my fish and corals mysis shrimp, brine shrimp with spirulina, pellets, flake, rotifers, nori, phyto plankton and zoo plankton. Not all at once but one or two of those a day. And varied.

thanks,...check out the TOTM august 2008..no powerheads no pumps no wavemakers jsut pure reef you will see what i am talking about i love it. I will need some tank planning help and donations j/k. hahha

I did. The fortunate individual has a lovely tank which includes:

Return Pump: Iwaki 100
Return Pump (refugium): Blueline 40
Water Movement: (2) Sequence 6000 pumps and (2) OceansMotions HD 4-way devices

which explains why his sps look good. I'm not sure how you thought there were no pumps / powerheads involved? I don't really care. It's just I've never heard nor seen of sps grown well without flow (and intense lighting and great water and...).

well i know he has return pumps and watr movement i just like the idea of drilling th eside of the tank in three spot to make the flow...make the tank like swiss cheese. i still have alot to plan...
