My third grade class and their reef tank

Hello Reefing Community,

My name is Brandon Rutherford and I teach in a third grade classroom at Garden Hill Elementary School in Champaign Illinois. One of my goals is to connect my students to the reef community and give the encouragement they need to learn new skills.

As a class, my students and I built a tank from scratch and installed all of the support systems needed to maintain it. They are really into all of the different pieces of equipment and how it works.

The marine biology, chemistry, and environmental ethics learned by building and maintaining the reef system are integrated into most areas of my curriculum. We use expository writing to document what we are learning. We read books about chemistry, marine biology, and ecology. Students have already taken over most of the detailed tasks necessary to cater to the chemical and physiological needs of the reef ecosystem. They can do all of the water tests, clean the skimmer, mix salt water and do water changes, frag coral and many of the other complex things reefers have to learn to move up to the master level.

Every classroom/student in the school, and several community groups, are allowed to access it. My students and the children who come in to help, take the responsibility of keeping the reef system healthy very seriously. Many live in extreme poverty and some are homeless or in the foster care system. They have never been trusted to oversee a project this magnitude and all have risen to the occasion.

Many stay after school or give up their recess time to care for it. The reef system exposes students to an ecosystem many of them will otherwise never see. It provides a hands-on contextual platform for complex science instruction. It also is a source of wonder for the entire school.

I have documented much of work we have done on the aquarium on my classes website. Please check it out for more information: http://mrrutherfordisawesome.weebly.com/reef-system.html

I will show this post to my class everyday. Please respond with well wishes or questions.

Great site! Amazing work there Mr. Rutherford. Very interesting and like Bill said, keep up the good work. Nice to see these things from time to time still are around :)

thanks everyone

thanks everyone

Thanks for all of the support. I know that my kids will be very excited to read your posts.

We would really appreciate if people would spread the word about our site. Please post my website on other appropriate sites to spread the word.

If my third grade teacher had a reef aquarium when I was in school, I probably would of became a marine biologist....very cool thing what you are doing.

I wish I had a teacher like you when I was in school! How exciting for the kids involved and for yourself. This is a great learning experience for everyone and it is fun to see kids getting excited about learning. Your reef looks great and has a lot of biodiversity in it. Keep up the great work!

Mr. Rutherford - you have some great kids in that classroom that are very lucky to have a teacher like yourself to take teaching to this level. This SURELY beats having a guinea pig! I just told my elementary school aged kids and they are jealous! Best of luck to you and your team of reef keepers this school year!

WOW....WOW.....WOW
What a beautiful tank....You guys & gals should be very proud.
I hope my tank will be as nice, I am just starting out and my tank is still cycling.
Nice job

Here's something that might be a help to you: http://www.petsintheclassroom.org/about/
This is a program that provides grants to teachers to help them pay for having pets as a learning tool. We have several teachers that are customers that have gotten this grant. If you have several classes involved, you may be able to get multiple grants. Thanks for all your hard work and for being a super teacher.

Hey fellow reefers,

Thanks again for all of the support and sound advice. It's been a hard sell educationally and i've had to do a lot of documentation to prove its pedagogical value but I am very glad that we started this project. It was kind of a leap of faith but it's getting more and more momentum and the kids love it. I teach children who live in poverty and many don't see science or education in general as something valuable. Having a project that requires them to learn science has been a major motivation and even people who aren't interested in reef keeping have acknowledged the power of what we're doing. It's more than just a fish tank.

Your grant idea is an excellent one, I've already applied for dozens and we've had some donations but it's going to an on going battle to keep this project funded, after 6K in credit card bills my wife has cut off me off so every bit will be a big help.

Simply awesome. What a great way to tie reading, writing, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics and appreciation for the natural world all together in a fun way! You can be sure your students will remember this experience for the rest of their lives.

You know what your doing so this suggestion is probably pretty elementary. But have you exposed your local media to your project? I'm sure local TV & newspapers would find this project very interesting to their audience. This also might lead to getting some community support. Great job!

WOW, you are the coolest teacher ever. If there was a reef tank in my 3rd grade class I would have actually looked forward to going to school.

PS, If you are interested I have some sea grass (Shoal grass: Halodule cf. beaudettei) I am planning on cutting back. I can send some your way if you are interested; just shoot me a PM.
