My Ultimate 40 Breeder Build

+1 on great build!

just found your thread today and everything looks amazing....thanks for keeping us updated.

i am just about to finish my stand as well.....which i hope to post pictures that i've taken along the way as you have. is that the 700 gph overflow? i have to order mine soon as well and was contemplating between two returns like you did or overflow on one side and return on other.

again.....congrats on everything....looks superb....great craftsmanship

nice build! excited to see the tank finished.

did you use a router to make those cut outs for the doors or are they sold pre cut like that?

Hey guys, sorry it's been so long since an update. To answer a couple questions, I used a cheap Kregg Jig to make the pocket holes, to build the doors I used a 1/4" slot cutting bit on a router, and I am using the glass holes 700gph kit. Thanks for all the positive feedback! I will update this thread whenever I get the chance.

Here is some weight lifting mat that I cut out for the sump/fuge to rest on inside the stand.

Here is the stand freshly sanded (again) and ready for stain.

First thing I did with the stand was gave it a coat of ebony water based stain.

The stain did not make it dark enough so I followed up with some ebonizing fluid. I put steel wool inside vinegar and let it sit for 24 hours. After that I sponged it over the wood. Worked like a charm!

After that, I applied about 4 coats of polycrylic to the whole thing. And it ended up looking like this:

For the interior I applied two coats of epoxy primer, then two coats of marine epoxy paint (yacht enamel). This stuff was a pain to work with for sure.

And that brings me up to date. Right now the tank and stand are sitting in storage until I move out. I still need to buy another vortech mp10 and some more apex parts.

Wow... I just commented on a build I thought was one of the tidiest in all my years here, but I didn't expect to run into another one so soon.

Very nice. Especially since you are doing all the work yourself.

I'm only being OCD because you look like you have the skill, but if you resiliconed the tank with black I think it would look 10x better.

I too would like an update. I'm in the planning stages of a diy 40b and I really like what you have done. Keep us posted.
