Please excuse my lack of photography skills. This is my very first SPS! Now according to my husband its completely pitiful looking because its sooo tiny. However I think its beautiful and hope with all my might that I don't kill it:(
My guy at the lfs told me it was a Red Planet and that it was a frag from a frag from a frag so it should be hearty enough to survive my newbness. Either way I was excited so I wanted to share.

doubt its red planet, hope you didn't pay an Arm and Leg for it.

None the less welcome to the SPS addiction lol. Its hard to say if its a red planet or not with a frag that small lol

Some things i've learned from keeping sps. Keep your Alk, Calc, and Mag in check, as i made a mistake of not monitoring my Alk which dropped to 5 and made things very upset.

Get a good 2 part and some good test kits if you dont already.

Enjoy!

EmuReef, I'm curious, what makes you think its not a red planet? and what do you think it is? And no I didn't pay much for it less than $20 actually which I was fine paying. I didn't go out looking for named frags..just ones that interested me and that didn't cost much since I have read so many horror stories on here I have to admit I'm rather frightened about raising these types of coral.

And thank you for the advice on the Alk,Calc and Mag. My Husband lets just call him a wanna be "Bill Nye the Science Guy" has every darn test kit available on the market and tests my water regularly. Nearly drove him nuts for weeks waiting for the tank to stabilize to the point where he would let me put something other than snails in it.

yea i corrected myself still nice piece! That wil be awesome once it grows out.

It could definitely be a red planet, just needs to grow out and color up some.

Congrats on your first of many sps aquisitions.

Thanks everyone! I was really excited to get it! I'm also enjoying looking at everyone else's tanks and learning about corals that I have been quite afraid to try before now. Now lets just hope everything I have read about LED lighting is true.

Congrats on your first SPS! It's an exciting moment. Any chance you have an FTS to share?

Do you really want to see a tank with a 1/4 inch frag in it? Because thats all I have besides a pile of rock and some snails:) Don't get me wrong I think its still awful pretty...but a bit boring at this stage:) I have been messing for weeks ..(ok, so I haven't but my husband has) with my pumps trying to get them "tuned" to my satisfaction. These Vortech's are a nice piece of equipment but not as intuitive as one might hope. And don't get me started on lighting.

Little Birds Nest

Little Birds Nest

This is the other lil frag I bought at the same time...yes its not very large either but shows some potential I think. Again the shot isn't the best as i'm still learning this Macro lens. My LFS guy said it was some super colored Birds Nest.
I had an a bit of an accident when acclimating these guys so I was happy to see them open up at all.

Looks like you're off to a good start. Watch the red planet as it grows the branches should be pink/red and if you start to lose the green color in the body you will want to move it down in the tank a bit. By losing the green I mean the whole thing will turn to pink/red. GL Grant
