My Vivaria

Did some repair work tonight and it looks much better...i'll probably doa few more repairs in the next few days...in general, how are the plants from black jungle? i was either going to order from them or little frog farm. once i get the plants in, i finally get to start looking for a nice pair of azereus!

Andy

Black Jungle has great plants when they're at shows and you're there in person, but they're not the best to buy from online/through shipments in my experience. Little Frog Farm (Rob) has some great stuff, but his site is mostly just orchids. Lately he has gotten some nice ferns (two of which I ordered for myself), but otherwise he specializes in orchids.

ok, so i'll probably order the ferns and orchids from little frog, but who would you suggest that i order the bromeliads from? i'd like some of he bright red and bright yellow broms and obviously ones that are good for the frogs and tadpoles. Do you think i Should get full grown broms or pups? I also want to get 1 or 2 aquatic plants for the water. As has been the case for about a month now, THANKS for your help!!!

Andy

do you want to see a picture of the bromeliad before you buy it? If so joshsfrogs.com usually has some nice ones listed. But if you know the specific varieties you want, michaelsbromeliads.com has a ton of stuff and one of the largest greenhouses in all of florida.. his master plant stock list is insane. full grown or pups, either are good depending if you want the tank to be full off the bat or not.

As far as aquatic plants, some good ones that grow nicely emerged too are Java Fern, Anubias and Echinodorus species.

Mike, i actually already placed my order for bromeliads yesterday. i think you had previously mentioned them too. i'm also likely going to get the ferns and some orchids from little frog farm. at some point i'll also add a few aquatic plants. i may end up with a few too many plants, but i'm probably gonna set up another tank anyway...i did check michaels and their stuff looks real nice! thanks again...Andy

excellent thread, i just started researching darts at the ny expo last month....keep up the great work

What is that beautiful purple plant in the lower left?

That plant needs to be trimmed heavily in a tank as it is actually a shrub; Strobilanthes dyerianus 'Persian Shield'. It does very well outdoors as well.

Since you bumped the thread, here are some more random plant shots.

I have also been inspired by this thread and I am in the process of setting up my own vivarium. I have a couple of questions if somebody wouldn't mind helping me out. What do you use for soil on top of the screening that covers the eggcrate? Are there certain plants I should put in first? Has anyone DIY'ed a mister on a timer to simulate rain? My reef is thriving but I am not so sure I can grow plants, any tips? Thanks in advance and I would love to see more pics to get some more ideas.

I probably should have just pm'd on the other board but since I saw this I'll ask here. First of all - Wow. I really love your setups. I appreciate the low tech setups over members high tech ones becuase it emphasizes the creatures and plants over the equipment. That being said, do you know where I can get my glass lids drilled for a fan? The local glass shop I called is very hesitant to do it. Second, what type of lighting are you using? I'm currently just using a chicken lamp with a CF bulb but it was only meant to be temporary. Lastly, do you know a good local source for PDF's? I lost my tinc colony and have just been letting the viv sit fallow and think I want to retry with leuc's instead due to a number of reasons. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Oh and one more ( since dendroboard seems to be having some tech difficulties at the moment ). Do you get any of your plants locally?

good to see many more are switching over to the frog side and still maintianning their reef tanks.
