My Vivaria

very cool. i think id like to section a part of the tank off like you did for water to collect. one thing im not understanding though, does water not get into the part where you have the egg crate? if it does, how do you get that water out, and if not, how do you get the water to drain only into the front section? via bulkhead with a ball valve?

I think the point of the eggcrate is to allow the water to go through it and sit below it rather than in the substrate drowning plants...

The eggcrate is there just to raise the substrate level and give room for the water to drain, which drains right through the eggcrate. There are many ways to accomplish this, but an eggcrate false bottom is one method. The water does not run to the front since the tank is level - it is everywhere under the eggcrate. The front is merely the area I access it to siphon it out. But that was my first tank of this kind, my second one has a hole/drain so I don't even have to do that, it drains by itself into a bucket. Hope I'm explaining it clear.

yea, im getting it now. i understand the eggcrate is there to let the water drain through, but i figured the tank was level so water would drain into the front, but at the same time some would form in the area under the eggcrate.

i think what ill do is drill the bottom, install a bulkhead and a ballvalve and then just drain the water like that.

thanks for all the help.

wow, i have been thinking about something like this...i have a 40 gal breeder to use for it...i'm gonna check out all the sites and do my research before i do anything, but i'm guessing i'll want to get the tang drilled. Can you keep any other animals with the frogs, such as salamanders or geckos? so you have two setups? do you keep the babies in other tanks??

Yes, he has the babies in smaller tanks, a 5g and a 2.5g i believe, he told me he got another baby, but im not sure where he put that one. I went to his house and checked out his tanks, they're really cool. Can't wait til I get mine finished, it's just about done :). Working on getting my frogs. 2 Dendrobates Leucomelas :D

i'd like to have some variety and need to read up on what types can be kept together and how many, etc...one other thing i don't understand with the setup is where is the "return" and what water is "removed" with the overflow...is there a filter or just a powerhead to move the water?

unless you mean to have a waterfall or something you don't need any powerheads, all you need is a hole with a bulkhead in the bottom beneath the false bottom made of eggcrate, so that any water that you mist the tank with to keep humidity up and plants watered falls down through to the bottom of the tank and eventually goes out the hole to wherever you tube it to.

You can't keep more than one species in one tank, since the species' can interbreed and that is very very frowned upon..so if you wanted to go with a few species either setup a few smaller tanks and put them next to each other or partition off a bigger tank into smaller sections for each species?

I would not keep geckos or salamanders in tanks with darts, nor would I keep different species of darts in the same tank, they are all found in different parts of the world and would never encounter each other in the wild.

Unless you have done research on a specific biotope habitat and have an extremely large enclosure, I would not mix anything, and it is frowned upon as well.

I know it's frowned upon, same goes for tortoises and uromastyx that I have (keep the 3 redfoot torts seperate from my sulcata). I was just wondering. So what do you have in the 40 gal breeder tank? i'd at least like to keep a decent # even if they are similar. Suggestions? I think i'll definately do the plants since that looks incredible and now i do understand the drain. What kind of light do you have over that, what would you suggest to keep the plants healthy and growing? I think you said a t-5, but how strong? I'm going to do my best to set mine up very much like yours, since your frogs seem very happy and are reproducing - proof that they ARE happy!

thanks!!!

Andy

There are a few species of dendrobates that can be kept together in groups if you research the frogs you'd like to keep, you can go by that. One type of frog that can be kept well in groups is Dendrobates Leucomelas, the type of frog I am getting. It is a really good beginner frog, and one of the bigger frogs. They are supposed to be very bold so that you will see them out a lot. So if you look through dendroboard look at the care sheets and see whether it says the frog you want to keep is good in groups or not and then you can get those if you want to have a good amount of frogs.

I have kept day geckos in with darts in the past, not a good idea, the geckos will attack the frogs.

I have just a pair in my 40, but in my 29 I have a group of 4. Depends on the species. My T5's are 39w each, but most plants would be happy with far less lighting.. these aren't corals thankfully :) .

Here are my two new Dendrobates Leucomelas that just arrived this morning.

pretty cool, i am sure you will enjoy them, they are prety bold and always out in the open.

Yea, they are, heres a picture of one of them towards the top of the tank on the glass:

i thought you could keep mourning geckos with them..i know i did for a while....they certainly multiplied like crazy though... i was told they were from the same place so it was ok....i was just a begineer though.... fruit flies got out of hand for me so i had to trade them in (frogs)...ended up making some money since my geckos had multiplied so fast

I would take your 75 if I had money.. just killed my last 300 on these guys..

Setting up a 18"x18"x24" for them (~30 gallon tall cube).. got some new ideas for the landscaping on this one.. will document construction with pics.
