My worst day of reefing...

I have been non-existant here for the last 2 months or so. I have had a lot of personal issues that needed to be addressed and have since taken care of. During tax season I bought a bunch of tanks thinking I was going the be the Reef man, but decided to consolidate and put everything I have in a 60 cube I bought here back in April or so. I moved a month ago down by the beach in San Clemente, and have taken my time to plan out this next tank. I designed and built the sump / fuge and have my step father working on an electrical panel for me. This whole time my beloved corals have been in the garage, awaiting their Grand Unveiling in their new home. This weekend was the weekend it was all supposed to go together....

I still had a few things to do, so I decided to plumb the tank and keep it running for 2 days to test for leaks, tweak flow and what not. When I turned my pump on I was amazed to find that the flow and return matched perfectly without any adjustments. I then began to setup my garage as to have a nice work area for drilling my rocks and creating my much awaited rock pillar designs. I set aside my sander and wood stain which was going to be the very last thing I did before hauling everything upstairs.

My new neighbors are pretty chill... they brought me over some beer this morning (I think it was beer-30) and we shot the sheit for a bit. One neighbor looks over and says "hey man, whats that bubbinling in the black paint in the back here?" I responded "*** are you talking about?" Much to my dismay I looked over and sure enough the paint was bubbling like crazy in the back (the paint for the black background. I scratched the paint off and discovered a huge crack from side to side along the back panel. This glass is 1/2 " thick too.

I quickly siphoned the water out to prevent any further mess. I am so at a loss right now. The tank was level where I put it. I have no idea if the crack was there aready but I sure didn't notice it. I don't know what could have caused it. All I know is that I am too broke to buy another tank right now and will be for another month or so. All this planning for the last few months and now this. I am mad and have nothing / nobody to direct my anger at. Damn.

On a side note, I noticed the stand doesn't support the tank evenly. When I look at the tank for the back view.... the stand kinda dips down like a millimeter in the middle and then connects to the tank again at the corners. Could this have been the culprit?

It could have. Some people use a stiff styrofoam pad to help that. So sorry to hear it...that's just a bummer. Here's hoping your corals are ok.

I take it this happened during testing and not with corals in and that's to the good.

it is always good to put a pad down, before you fill the tank with water. I used some indoor outdoor carpeting...

The weight in the water could have cracked it... but then it could have been there.

I thoroughly thought out my plan before I set out my tank, planned it for weeks , engineered the drawings, and had every step lined up...

I checked with many people on reef central before I started and the president of SCMAS showed me the pad that he put down...

I overbuilt my stand... lag screwed 5/16 inch screwed my frame into the studs in the wall...

Been running over a year now without any problems.. thank god. I was deathly afraid of something like that happening to me.. or let alone 3-4 mos after it was installed...

I feel for you...

a millemeter isnt a big deal, but I would put some plywood downto even out the breaks, and then some carpeting over top.

On the bright side, it could have been much, much worse. Coulda had your corals in there, or the leak could have caused a huge flood in your place.

Who manufactured the cube? Every so often someone on this board is literally giving away a large-ish tank, or sellling one cheap. Good luck getting back together!

Get on the phone to local glass companies. You can eliminate a lot of them after a fast conversation; check the yellow pages for Aquarium---Repair, just in case there's someone who specializes. Know your dimensions, glass thickness and trim types. Some will, some won't. No sense driving all over town.

Ah, the old Metaframe days when we just pressed black goo into a seam and hoped for the best.

But surely somewhere in Orange County is someone who knows how to replace a glass.
