Mysid takeover!

I have so many mysid can't count them. I would get in the high hundreds lol
Guess my question would be what type of fish would most benefit from them?
I have a cycled 30 gallon fuge started with about another 200 or so of these buggers and tons of pods to supplement what ever fish I get.

Any suggestions for reef safe fish ?? also I do not want any fish that makes tunnels for sake of a collapse.

Would I be able to sustain a manderin?
 
But.......Would I be able to keep him healthy/well fed ...long term? Wouldn't one deplete all pods/shrimp in a few months? or no? Just asking because I know to look for one that eats frozen or pellets but if not Im wondering if my system would support him long term?
 
Oh and also I set the 30 gallon fuge up as a temp holding tank, can I keep the manderin in the 30 gallon for maybe just 2 weeks just to watch for parasites? I know they say a Qt for a manderin is a death trap but I want to make sure it does not have Ich or any other parasite? And I figured the fuge has a population of pods and shrimp to keep him happy for those 2 weeks.
 
Omg on a 180 gallon he will be fine. you will forget he is even in that tank after a while.

Just make sure you grab a small one with a fat belly. Getting a healthy one is the hard part.

Really ok, And yeah a fat one is what u would think I'd get, but knowing me I'd look for one that's skinny to try and save him lol
 
awesome choices...Shawna...the last couple times i've been to CF, they have always had fat mandarins.
 
The mandarin can be trained to eat frozen- perhaps while in qt. You have to be dilligent, though. Start with live brine, then move to frozen brine- this takes some effort like training a lionfish- they only chase while it's moving (ie dropping through the water column.) Once it hits the dirt they'll largely ignore it to begin with. You have to keep picking it up with a baster and trying again. It's a pita, but could save its live long-term. But, sounds like you've got quite the pod population and a fuge so you'll probably be good anyhow:)

Plan was to put him in fuge with some of live mysid for a few weeks.Couldn't I train him on the mysid instead of brine? or do they not like mysid :( the population in the fuge is not that big so I can supplement with frozen mysid to train?

As bluephish13 said in a 180 the mandarin will have plenty to eat and then some, also I have found that if it gets hungry they will eat bloodworms, and brine shrimp or at least mine does. When I feed my sun coral the target along with others always stop by to have a little snack and the target feeds all day long on my rock work as well.
Through my readings the tank should be established with a fair amount of rock and the presence of pods and if your concerned with it you could put a small rubble pile in somewhere and that will help produce pods too.

Hi shawna. Ive had my red scooter in my tank for 8 months now other than one time I saw him try some frozen mysis I have never seen him eat anything. He must be getting something though because when I bought him he was very skinny. I know but he look sad in that Petsmart tank. Now hes about 1/2 inch longer and fat as a pig so I assume hes getting something.

in a 180 you could support a pair of mandarins easily. you can also feed your tank a bit of phytoplankton. most of your corals will not eat this but your copepods and amphipods will go crazy for it. throwing a bit of that every once in awhile will keep your population up if youre worried about it. you could also try throwing in cyclopes ive seen mandarins eat those before too.
 
i agree with superkat...mandarins would be in heaven in your tank. My leopard wrasses love pods too and have never touched a single coral in my tank. In the size your tank is, you'll never have to worry about them being depleted/used up.
