Mysid takeover!

you probably already know this, but the pair of mandarins needs to be male and female, otherwise there's a scuff that ends badly....i have a female spotted and a male psycho.

Plan was to put him in fuge with some of live mysid for a few weeks.Couldn't I train him on the mysid instead of brine? or do they not like mysid :( the population in the fuge is not that big so I can supplement with frozen mysid to train?

Yes, for sure you could train on mysis. I didn't realize your qt had them already- so easy transition from live to frozen there. The trick is to start with live, then try frozen food of same variety (ie, if you start with live brine, then transition to frozen brine before mysis.)

Good luck! This worked for me and I was able to keep a mandarin in my 55g (years back.)

Hi shawna. Ive had my red scooter in my tank for 8 months now other than one time I saw him try some frozen mysis I have never seen him eat anything. He must be getting something though because when I bought him he was very skinny. I know but he look sad in that Petsmart tank. Now hes about 1/2 inch longer and fat as a pig so I assume hes getting something.

Hey Stranger lol
You have a pic of the scooter?

in a 180 you could support a pair of mandarins easily. you can also feed your tank a bit of phytoplankton. most of your corals will not eat this but your copepods and amphipods will go crazy for it. throwing a bit of that every once in awhile will keep your population up if youre worried about it. you could also try throwing in cyclopes ive seen mandarins eat those before too.

Huh I have photoplex is this the same or should I get the photoplankton?
Thanks.

Ahh Ok good! lol TY

think photoplex may be too small. I wouldn't go to huge extremes on the extra food if you have this mysid population. i know mine eat frozen, pellets, plus whatever is in the water....i also get the Rod's Food fish eggs (ARC has them) and the corals and the mandarins love that.

Rods Fish eggs? huh never saw that (Thanks)

the male has a very long and pointy dorsal fin....goes all the way down his back.

positive that ARC has them. ask for them. coral loves it as well. If you are in Rochester, CF carries as well. I would be happy to bring some with me the next time i come down if you don't get it before then.

I only have a 60gal with a good fuge and i have never tried to feed my female mandarin in 2 yrs. If a spectrum pellet drops near her she will go for it.

I would not worry about it.
