mysis shrimp

I think for the effort of cultivating them at home, its cheaper to buy frozen ones.. unless you have a really fuzzy eater that only wants live mysis...

Check out Inland Aquatics - http://www.inlandaquatics.com/prod/prod_detrit.html

In their detritivore kits they include live mysis, and you just throw them in the tank and let them do their little shrimpy business. I think you may be able to order the mysis alone, but you have to go to their price list to find them. In my case the first mysis explosion came a couple weeks or so after I introduced them, and there have been a few more since. Now at night when I shine the flashlight in I can see them hovering under my rocks. I hadn't seen that in previous weeks, so they must be surviving and settling in.

I've never looked at what it would take to culture your own if you need to supplement, but from what others here have said it sounds like it might be more trouble than it's worth. I'd agree with using the frozen cubes as additional food; they're a lot more convenient. ;)

They're cannibalistic, which limits density. :)

that pretty much sums it up :). thats where the equipment comes to play. you need a system with two tanks. one for the babies, and one for the adults. you have to have screens, and all kinds of plumbing to separate the juvi's from the adults, then move them back and forth as they mature. just way to much work for most people. the book titled Plankton Culture Manual by Hoff & Snell cover mysis. just reading about it convinced me not to bother LOL
