Calling all clown experts. Can someone explain to me why is it that every time I put in any type of ocelaris clowns, within a few days they die :( only ocelaris, i have skunk clowns and they're ok. What mystery killer do I have in the tank that only affects occis?

How big are they?

Clowns are very territorial similar to similar species of tangs. They can be brutal. If all ere added at same time and tank is a big tank I'd say you might have success at least for a while and they'd establish their territory on opposite sides but if the skunks are already established and paired up I think the Ocellaris would be attacked and that could be your problem. I wouldn't add your black ones in with them

There are no aggressions involved between the different species. It's weird, they're fine for a few days and then show loss of appetite and drop dead within a week. Could it be some sort of disease?

I don't know. I thought it might be species aggression. What do the percs look like after death. Do you see anything visual that would indicate disease or injury like ulcers, fungus, torn fins etc?

Some of them not all of them showed some sort of mucus membrane on their dead bodies.

I would be surprised if it was not your skunk clowns. I would not even try to add other clowns with them.

How big is this tank? I know its possible to have multiple clown species in a tank, but it has to be huge tank.

Try to QT them for a few weeks and get them nice and fat next time.

150g, they were in my QT before I put them in the main tank. I didn't QT the skunks and they are the ones doing fine. I'm baffled 😕

That you see. Even harassing and stressing them can lower immunity to the point they suffer.

Work through the process of elimination, everything in tank is fine and healthy, all new entries are qt'd successfully, only adding clowns after successfully qt'ing end up dead and I already have established and different species of clowns which is considered a no-no because they're very territorial and aggressive to their own and other clown species. Just sayin......

It is no mystery! There is no way you are going to be able to add any other species of clowns to a tank that size. Even adding more skunk clowns is likely to end in death. I would not even try it in a 300 gallon. One head but from the skunks is all it takes to kill the others. Skunk clowns are know to be one of the more aggressive clowns.
