mystery disappearance

have several mushroom rocks in the tank - two doing perfectly. But the big rock which had about 12 blue-purple shrooms is now - within two days - totally nude. Not a single mushroom on it. Not on the sand either - nowhere to be found. What in the world could be eating them? Have the normal clean up crew and no bad hitchikers that I know of. Help! (no before and after photos - sorry.) Everything else in tank is just fine. thanks

me again - what does the closed envelope icon next to my post mean? I don't see it on other posts. Am I doing something wrong?

My first bet would be a predatory worm. A good-sized worm could mow down your shrooms overnight.

Read this article: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-04/rs/index.php

Eunice sp and Oenone fulgida worms have been known to take a liking to soft corals, especially ricordia, shrooms and zoanthids.

You'll probably have to stake your tank out at night with a redlight flashlight to have any luck seeing the worm (if you have one).

Good luck,
Kevin

No matter how safe people say any crabs and shrimp are they are still opportunistic and if hungry could start eating anything.
Do you have any and what kind are they!
The flash light idea is good you can use any flashlight but a pen light has a smaller beam and wont scare every critter in the tank at once . I never see red flash lights around myself. I suppose you could cover the lens with red cellophane though.

That's interesting. Oenone fulgida and its relatives are all mollusc specialists as far as we know. Perhaps in the absence of any molluscs they'll go after other organisms. I'd love to see a pic of one in the act and then get the worm to confirm the id. Members of Oenone, Halla, and Lysarete are so similar in appearance dissection is needed to know which one it is.

found out I had a high iodine level from overdosing Lugols but now everything is just perfect... so only one casualty. All others doing great. Thanks
