Mystery spots

Wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this problem

I recently treated an Ancanthurus Japonicus [White faced Tang] for ich. I used Hyposalinity for 4 weeks at 1.008 SG. I used a refractometer, changed 50% of the water every other day. The Tang showed no signs of ich for the entire 4 weeks. I slowly brought the sg up, really slow, took almost 1 1/2 weeks. He has developed white splotches and now has a few 'whitehead pimple' type bumps also. I first suspected Lymphocystis, and this may be the case as the bumps and splotches have remained on the fish for a week, not getting worse or better . I had also thought bacterial infection. The fish is breathing and behaving normal. When he had his ich outbreak, he was flashing and darting around acting crazy..he is not displaying this behavior at this time. I have continued the large water changes every other day, I feed a variety of good frozen foods and alternate soaking the food in Vitachem and Selcon.
I have left him be for now, he is behaving perfectly normal and eating well...Any ideas or suggestions?
Thankyou

well i would prolly keep him in the tak a little longer and try a UV filter and see if with the UV on it the bumps go away i had a problem like this once never did figure out what it was but this UV filter helped me alot with getting the spots and bumps off of the fish hes now back in the display and happy as ever!

I'm not sure if this really sounds like lympho to me. If I had my disease site up and running, I could show you a bunch of photos to compare it to, but the server is down right now. Lympho is actually a collection of small tumor like growths, they won't have the "scattered"/random pattern of an ectoparasite. BTW, they don't always do the scratching behavior with ich, though they usually do. How big are the bumps?

The bumps vary in size..some are white splotches like a scab was removed..other spots vary in size. I have treated ich, it doesn;t look like ich. I will try to post pic. He is very calm. eating well..I don't know..very strange

I took another good look at him. The spots are not raised, they do not appear like salt. It looks as though someone painted grey polka dots on him:confused: I am thinking about lowering the sg again, maybe trying an antibiotic [I usually use Furan-2] I am stumped. I sure wish he could talk;)

i know this sounds kinda of crazy but try gettin a cleaner wrasse and put in there with him maybe the wrasse can get whats on him off. I see your from indy so Uncle Bills could be your ticket to a cheap one and take them a water sample in from the tank hes in he might be stressed from somethin in the tank is he kinda of pale?

I don't think cleaner wrasses or UV is your answer here.

If the spots are not raised, it doesn't sound like lympho. Also does not sound like ich. I think it could be a bacterial infection, the antibiotics may be a good idea if you have a hospital tank. A picture would be best...

Hutch1814, If I get a Cleaner Wrasse from Uncle Bills, It will probably have ich;) I used to go to the one on Washington but the fish began looking so bad. If you live in Indy, try the Abyss..the owner is VERY picky about his fish.
I got my Tangs from Thr Reef, all of which have been treated for ich so I won't be going back there

Pandora, I went to take a picture last night and of course my batteries are dead:rolleyes:

I am probably going to start Furan-2 tonight, see if it helps. Thanks for your help, I want to get this guy healthy and in my big tank!

Well, I continue to be stumped

I treated the Tang with Furan-2 which cleared up the blotches but the little pimples remained..I stopped after 2 doses as the pimples seem to get worse
A few days later I preformed a 1 hour dip in Paraguard [ Seachem product, Similar to Formalin but without the Menthonal] I watch the fish, he seemed to have strings hanging off off him during the dip. Most fell off. He still had the spots after the dip. A couple of days later I preformed a freshwater dip [in a hurry that morning, didn't have time for the 1 hour thing] Same thing, I noticed a couple of white strings hanging from him
The Pimple spots are better but still present. He is still eating and seems normal otherwise. Many of the spots are the same color as the fish and do not fall off.

Question: This fish had gone through 4 weeks of hypo, could Flukes or other such parasites survive this?
If in fact it is flukes, what are the 'pimple' spots and how can I get rid of them?

Could this possibly be a secondary infection?

Should I just get the guy some zit cream ?;)

Any ideas, anyone??

OH, BTW...I have also dropped SG to 1.009...I did this very slow, took a little over a week

i was going to post on this and ask what these pimple spots were. My tang had black ich and now he has only one of these pimple spots on him....

One could be Lymphopcystis, this comes and goes . Pristine water condition helps clear it up. Its viral, so there is no cure. It is not fatal, just ugly. When it grows looks like cauliflour.
Just watch for more spots

If you use antibiotcs it should be for several days depending on what antbiotic that you use. You might try Furanase (Nifurpirinol) and add some Beta glucan to the food. At this point you could raise the salinity as I doubt that you are seeing ich.

Thanks Terry, I don't think its ich either. I am going to use my last batch of Spectrogram on him starting tomorrow and try another freshwater dip.
He does look much better, a couple weeks ago he looked as if someone painted polkadots on him, now when others look at him, they don't see the spots till I point them out..my mother doesn't see them at all:rolleyes:
Thanks again;)

Okay, this is getting more strange:confused:

I am on my second dose of Spectrogram. I did a 40% water change and added the second dose about 40 minutes ago. I went to check on my Tang and the spots now appear to be strings. One coming off his dorsal fin is 1/2 inch long:confused:

I am going to try to get a picture but the water is murky green with meds so I am not sure how good it will show

I have also thought Columnaris was a possibility, any thoughts?

I wanted to update my thread for those who may have similar problems with their Tangs

I completed treatment with Spectrogram and the Tang looks great! Spots and blotches are gone.

I will of course post if anything changes

I too have a similar conditiong with my PB tang that I've had for
1 1/2 years. The color under the bump looks alittle like a blackhead, they come and go. I would like to kow if i should get him out and treat him. Nobody knows what this could be. He acts fine and eats fine.

Wow, I never did update this thread:eek:

I ended up putting this Tang and my Hippo from another quarantine in my main..Apparently I didn't wait long enough, this time BOTH tangs ended up with these strange spots:mad: I have come to the conclusion this is some type of Fluke/worm. The other fish in the main remained healthy so I removed the two Tangs to qt, treated with Prazipro which seem to clear it up...I did the recommended treatment and two days after I removed the meds, my Whiteface looked HORRIBLE! Splotches and spots, he was breathing heavy, sitting on the bottom, sometimes laying down:eek: He was also not eating.. It appeared to me he may have a secondary infection so I treated with Furan-2...this cleared up the large splotches but the spots remained. The next day I started 1 of 3 formalin dips. Well, he has came back from the dead! Both Tangs just finished the 3 dips and look great. The Whiteface is back to his old self

Poopsko, my Husband is a Firefighter here in Indy! But my firefighter has no interest in this hobby:(

Anyway, have you added anything new lately? Fish, coral?Has he been scratching? If the spots are black, it could be black ich. You should start a thread and post some pictures if you can

Thanx for the follow up. He's not scratching or acting weird at all. I did add a stupid orange tree sponge, thats all, hope that it has nothing to do with anything. I'm gonna wait it out for awhile. I'm almost sure its not black ich. I'll try to get a pic.
