just got a new tang and im not sure what kind he is he has a red belly and yellow fins and blue body any ideas?

Do you have a pic? And I hope it's not for your 30 gallon tank. What else is in the tank with it? What was the fish labeled as at the fish store? How do you buy a fish that you not only not know anything about, but not even know what it is to be able to research it??

we're going to need a picture to give you any reliable ID. And I agree, much wiser to research before you buy something than to start doing so after a commitment has been made. Is this for your 30 gallon tank listed in your signature? If so, I can assure you it's a bad choice, regardless of what species it is.

not only do you get a tang for a 30 gallon but you do not know what kind it is? wow that is pretty sorry. read a book, do a google search, get a **ckin* clue

He only has 12 posts. Give him the benefit of the doubt. How many people are misled by local fish stores before they find Reef Central. Some stores prey on new hobbiest and I highly doubt they will recommend books, google searching or RC. Not cool to ridicule him without knowing the whole story.

i concur guys, we all were new at some point. Lets see what it is and what we can do to help him. Can you please post a picture if possible?

Some of the best advice I have ever seen on RC. With help like this more people will enjoy the hobby. The others should take note, you are the type that drive people away from this great hobby.

If people are driven away from the hobby for being told to research a particular fish BEFORE bringing it home, then they don't have the stomach for this hobby in the first place. Now is there a nicer way of saying it? Absolutely. I think the advice to about know what you're bringing home before doing so, is better advice than what you were refering to.

We'd still like you help you out...... This sounds like a pretty sweet looking tang.

Tampa: You will turn blue in the face and bore calluses on your fingers if you spend you time condemning every person that makes a newb mistake.

Condemning him for making a newb mistake? I said that there was a nicer way for everyone to tell him he should have known what he brought home. And what I was saying was that if he left the hobby because a few people gave him good advice of knowing what the fish's requirements were - or at least what kind of fish it was - before bringing it home, then he couldn't handle this hobby anyway. Again though, there was a much nicer way to go about telling him he had made a mistake.

I doubt jakeg posts again. I know I wouldn't if people responded with that 'why did you do that!' attitude. When I first started I was talked into buying some purple queen anthias. The LFS told me they were very hardy just like my damsels and I believed them. They died two days later, and I was out my money because the LFS only had a 24 hour guarantee. I then researched them and found out they are hard to keep and have special feeding requirements. I also realized that I shouldn't be buying fish from a store that would give me false information and have a short guarantee.

Not everyone knows to research fish before they purchase them. Sometimes people have to learn the hard way, and I was one of them. It takes years to learn about this hobby, and experienced people still make mistakes, all you can do is learn from your mistakes and move on.

We have all made newb mistakes , let give the guy a chance he can always return the fish if it was the wrong fish for his setup . we dont need the call the tang police so quickly. I have 11 fish in my 125 including a 6 year old desjadini, a pacific blue, a tomini tang,2 leopard wrasses, a mystery wrasse, a yellowfin fairy wrasse, plus 2 gobys and 3 pj cardinalsall of which are fine and healthy and this is in an sps dominant tank.

Tampareefer79 is admitting there was a nicer way to tell the guy his mistake. However, we are not certain he even put it in a 30 gallon. I think the person that made the rude comments was lostintheocean. That is what drives people away from the hobby. With lostintheocean's post count, he is probably not the best at giving good advise and helping out new people in the hobby. We know he has at least one post that is rude and not helpful at all, and he even throws in cursing for good measure. Way to go!

Can't think of any tangs that have that colouration.

Pics would help.

From there, then we can decide whether or not it is even a tang!

You're right, the name calling and swearing were uncalled for. Telling him he made a mistake...was not. I wasn't refering to the 30 gallon tank as the mistake, rather the 'bringing a fish home without knowing which fish it is, what it's name is, or what it's requirements' was. That's not going to change. That was a mistake and I hope the OP learns that through this thread. Minus the name calling...

I have to go back and remind you guys again. 9 times out of 10, LFS will give bad advice to make a sell. Probably the case here. The LFS gives advice, the new hobbiest takes it as his research, and feels he is doing nothing wrong, after all, he is new to the hobby. Then wanting to learn more, decides to ask for help on the ID. In return is ridiculed. However, if he never responds, none of us can offer help, or even be rude to him. LOL.

He only has 12 posts...but HAS been on RC for almost a year... Good point though michealprater, you made me think back and remember how the LFS got me good a few times back before I knew about RC and the like.
