Mystery Wrasse and Shrimp

Had a previous McCosker's that killed some shrimp. LFS gave me my money back only if I bought another fish that day. They ended up having only the Mystery Wrasse.

I got home put him in and everything seems to be fine, he sometimes swims at the lubbock's wrasse but other than that he does fine. However I was able to do more research at home and realized I may have made a bad decision. Generally quick on the spot decisions are.

I have a skunk cleaner shrimp, fire shrimp, and 1 peppermint shrimp. Should I try getting rid of this mystery wrasse as he is just a ticking time bomb? Really don't want to lose my shrimp as they are super friendly and cool. Any suggestions?

Sorry to say, but when the wrasse reaches maturity, your shrimp are probably going to be on the menu. Just the nature of the beast. If you value your shrimp, I would return the fish or try to find another reefer to take it, even if I didn't get any money out of the deal.

I'm not sure I would shop at that LFS again.

^ Yup.

Also, it's quite unlikely the McCoskers ate a live shrimp, unless we're talking about a very small shrimp (ie - sexy shrimp). If you found him eating something larger, I have a strong feeling it was already dead.

Lastly, any Pseudocheilinus wrasse isn't very compatible with other wrasses (like a C. lubbocki).

Thanks guys for the information, going to have to catch him tonight and take him back to the store see what I can get in credit. Better than losing my shrimp they are far more entertaining. I learned my lesson this time, do not buy anything without doing a lot of research first.

I agree with both points.

I really appreciate the help guys, I got really lucky. I am getting a couple corals from a friend who has a bigger tank than me with no ornamental shrimp and he just happened to need a new wrasse.

So I get a few new aussie corals, instead of losing a 60-75 dollars.

Thanks again!
