mystery wrasse?

have a question about the qt of this fish and wrasse in general... i know they like to bury themselves in sand however in my qt i do not have sand... does this matter and will the fish make it thru the qt process with no sand? my qt process is 4-8 weeks depending on fish and how well the fish reponds to the qt. i dont treat unless illness has developed and then the qt will be more towards the 8 week mark... i dont want to spend the 100+ bucks on a fish if it will not make it thru the qt.. thanks in advance!!!

Part of the success gained by using a QT is in the lowered stress levels they provide.

If a wrasse wants sand, and you're inclined to add some, I'd go for it.

If it's not convenient to add enough sand, maybe place some in a plastic bowl, and sink that to the bottom of the QT.

I have never seen my mystery wrasse bury itself in the sand, even when the lights go out. He pretty much hides himself in the corner of the tank and some rocks when the lights go out.

my mystery never burried itself in the sand, he just picked a cave. BUT make sure you have a tight lid. Mine squeezed its way out after 3 great months, he had grown close to an inch..... great fish

My juv Mystery wrasse never buries itself in the sand. He is always in and around the rock work. He also never goes above the lower 1/3 of the tank.

My mystery wrasse has never buried. Mine has become really agressive as it got bigger. I've had it for about 2 yrs and it eats any shrimp or small fish I add to the tank.

the mystery wrasse does not bury itself at night but it does like crevices to hook into and sleep . it is a hardy wrasse and should be able to deal with the stress of the QT process without providing it with sand as they wont be needing it .

the only wrasse i've ever had that buried itself was a yellow wrasse, my six line and mystery wrasse never did bury themselves, they would just find a hole in a rock to snuggle into at night and that was it.

all leopard, tamrin and coris wrasses will burry at night as they do in the wild .flashers ,fairys,and many others will "snuggle"as DeepSeaHunter has stated .

This is correct. Sixlines and mystery wrasses "cocoon" themselves in a mucus tent to sleep. It's gross, so if you see it in your QT, don't freak out.

I'll add to the majority here in that the mystery wrasse does not sleep buried in sand.

That's interesting about the cocoon.. I've seen the clear mucus blobs before and always thought they were bacterial blooms. There was a big one floating around this morning which just coincides with my having adding 3 lyertail anthias to the tank. There have been some teritorial disputes going on since I put them in. I was also surprised to find the mystery wrasse in my tank has an affinity for nori..

usually they swallow the mucuss sack so there is no trail or anything left behind ,it may even get recycled .

Sorry for going OT but...

I knew some inverts would be high risk, especially as the fish got bigger but didn't realise small fish could be at risk. What species of fish have you seen it eat?

Has anyone else experienced this - if so, which species?
