Sergeant-G,
Regarding your question about Tampa Bay Saltwater: I'm a huge TBS fan. I went with their 'Package' for my 225 gal reef tank project and have been THRILLED with the result. Not trying to do an infomercial here, but their 'Package' is a combo of live sand, rock and critters that essentially transplants a Carribean reef biotope to your tank. Check out my website for a snapshot of what TBS 'Package' does for your tank:
DA' REEF
(btw, I asked Richard at TBS to give me a discount if I plugged TBS up here and posted pix, but he politely declined. Not sure if that's arrogance or confidence, but I figure he deserves the plug anyway!

)
Now the drawback on this method is that you get EXACTLY what they find when they dive, the good AND the "bad". I personally got about 5 mantis shrimp, which promptly set about killing off my cleaning crew, and in one case threatening a royal gramma. I can't tell you how many HOURS I spent trying to trap the little monsters. Somehow in the process they starting seeming really cool to me -- go figure -- but NOT in my reef display, so I get them out and have given most of them away to others on RC. (I also got a couple gorilla crabs and one sadistic little killer oyster toadfish that massacred several small fish, but that's a story for another time! :rollface: )
But even if someone GIVES you a mantis, be prepared to pay big-time shipping costs. I just shipped a 6-pound 13" x 8" x 8" box containing 2 mantis shrimp, an ugly crab and a few urchins to another RC member, and the Priority Overnight shipping was over 50 bucks. If I had NOT used this type of shipping, especially this time of year, the chances of the critters arriving alive would have been minimal. Dr. Roy, I think, estimates that they'll live about 24 hours bagged up, even if properly packed -- and it's HARD to pack them properly! :>
Anyway, if you decide to buy a mantis from TBS or anyone else by mailorder, the price of the critter will usually be DWARFED by the price of the shipping. I doubt they'd charge you 80 bucks though -- just call and find out to be sure. They normally ship huge orders of rock/sand IN WATER (read: ultra heavy), so they ship by air cargo (you pick it up usually at the Southwest terminal at your local airport), which ships for about 55 bucks per hundred pounds, but you have to pay for at least 100 pounds I think. If you're about to build a new tank or upgrade an existing tank, maybe you could arrange it so that you could get the 'Package' from TBS and get them to throw in a mantis when they ship everything else? Just a thought...
Sorry for nattering on...hope this helps a little...
Kind regards,
hal
