I've had this little guy for 3 months. When I got him he was about 3/4 inch long, had a yeleow tail and only 2 bars. I thought it was a juvi chrysopterus, but now I have no idea. He is now 2 inches. What do you think? sorry for the blurry pics, water movement is pretty brisk, so it's hard to get a sharp image.

i agree with chris, i had an allardi (well i certainly believed it was an allardi) that looked very similar, if not darker than the one pictured....

Really guys (and gal ;)) clarkii? Why, because of the third stripe and tail coloration? I really stink at id'ing the clarkii complex.

tyler

..Hmm..He looks like a Paco to me...

ok guys, here's a new pic that shows the blue tint in the stripes. I had to underexpose the pic to keep from washing out to bright white, but I haven't played with the color balance at all.

I'm looking a video from the Marshall Islands right now and there is a tricinctus in the video that looks very much like the one pictured.
The clarki complex is difficult. There are just so many different color varieties of each species. Was the tail on yours bright yellow when you got it or clear pale yellow.
Here is the pic. Sorry for the quality.

the tail was a solid yellow. I wouldn't say bright, but it was not a pale/translucent color. When the tail started to darken, it first turned at the base, so that the tail looked a lot like an allardi, then it gradually filled in to completely dark brown. The pectorals with a dark base and yellow edges are very much like the tricinstus pic. BTW, the pecs were also fully yellow, then darkened from the base.

I think this is going to be one of those cases where if you don't know where it was captured, there is very little chance for a positive ID short of an autopsy.
