Nano Filter?

If the nano filter pump is set to the lowest setting (39 gph) does it generate enough fall inside the filter box to effectively skim the tank surface. I suppose this depends in part on the water level in the tank relative to the filter inlet.

Having never tried I cannot give a definite answer but I don't think it would work very well.

Is there a plate above the pump to support media?

Yes, it is a perforated plastic plate, loose media like carbon needs to be in a bag, a filter bag is included.
