Nano Lighting Reaserch and Questions

Hey all,

Well, I have spent almost the entire week looking for nano lighting for my 10 gallon, unfortunately, I am left with more questions then answers. I figured I would share what I have found and look to see if anybody is willing to divulge what they plan on using.

This list is not a definitive, complete list and is based on my research / experience. Information here should be taken only as an opinion and not fact. I have excluded NO and experimental lights because there are too many variables and in general, NO light is not sufficient for nano REEF systems with anything other then hardy corals.

MH (70w-175w):
Ballast Cost: $69 - $150
Bulb Cost: $40-$89
use for SPS: Yes
use for LPS: Yes
use for Softies: Yes
use for Clams: Yes
smallest size Available: N/A
Benefits: works very well, the best overall solution for performance
Downsides: Heat and cost are two MAIN factors. the average setup will run up to $200 for a nano setup. nanotuners DOES have setups starting around $139 with DE/HQI bulb.

Power Compact (18w, 24w, 36w, 55w):
Ballast Cost: ~$30 for DIY
Bulb Cost: $15-$22
use for SPS: Caution
use for LPS: Yes with regular feedings
use for Softies: yes
use for Clams: with extreme caution
smallest size Available: 6"
Benefits: Power compacts deliver good light for the cost, unfortunately, depending on the bulb and distance to creature, lighting MAY be too weak for some corals.
Downsides: PC's are hot, requiring fans. They also loose their spectrum after about 6 months, and overall efficiency after 9-10 months.

VHO:
Ballast Cost: $30-$69
Bulb Cost: $19-$24
use for SPS: Yes
use for LPS: Yes
use for Softies: Yes
use for Clams: With Caution
smallest size Available: 18"
Benefits: par / lumens is greater then PC allowing for a more diverse collection of animals. They do not heat up as much as the PC's.
Downsides: VHO is still hot, although you could get away with slits or light air flow. VHO ballasts are expensive and not commonly found at local lighting stores. VHO also does not come in any size less then 18" restricting the size of the tank.

T5:
Ballast Cost: $15-$45
Bulb Cost: $15-$22
use for SPS: Yes
use for LPS: Yes
use for Softies: Yes
use for Clams: Yes / With Caution
smallest size Available: 24"
Benefits: T5 is very inexpensive for a very nice system. Ballasts can be found at virtually any lighting store and bulbs are fairly cheap and have been known to last more then 12 months. The light output is much greater then any other fluorescent.
Downsides: Not many manufactures create T5HO bulbs, restricting the "Look" and competition for better equipment. Bulbs are only found at specialty shops commonly found online. Lastly, T5HO bulbs minimum length is 24" which severely limits the ability to use this technology on smaller nanos.

Oh yeah, I plan on using a 2x36w PC DIY setup. I would love to try the T5 method, but I can't find any T5HO under 24" and my tank is 20" long so I would need to extend the canopy almost 5" to fit them with the end caps. :(

I am trying to figure out if I do an X shape design to make them fit, but I need to do a few tests to see how that would look / work with one of then higher then the other

current power compac
20" 40 w, 2lamp, 24 hour lighting system
4 lamps in 2 dual daylight(6700k/10,000k)
dual actinic (420nm/460 nm)
but the pricing was around 150...........

I don't mind sharing what I am planning as far as lighting or anything else goes. Just as long as if someone decides to use it and didn't think of it themselves than at least say where they got the idea. :)

I'm thinking about a $50 DIY halide , but I might not because of the heat issue.

Also I was looking into the PC lighting in this thread. This is a long thread but worth the read. Very good information. And he built it for around $115. So that would leave us with $85 for livestock.

The latter would be cheaper and you wouldn't have to order any parts such as ballasts from the internet hence no shipping charge.

First off, with the sudden announcement that the nano build-off was underway, I had to throw all plans out the window on DIY lighting. I did consider other contests and DIY projects posted on the net, but simply did NOT find any solution any more affordable than what I am doing (I am trying to stay under the 200 mark, regardless of whether out of pocket or total tank worth).

Second, due to this lighting limitation, I will also be forced to work with softies, primarily. For more on this, look in my postings in the nano build-off, not yet posted.

Third, I am working with a traditional 10 gallon tank, as I believe you are.

So...I ordered my lights today from Aquatraders.com. A single-bulb PC, 20 inch, 36 watt. The light is only 29 bucks, but shipping was 12!!! Wish I had someone to share the burden! This lamp stands up off the tank on feet, hopefully alleviating heating/cooling concerns...ask me in a month if it was a good investment!

Best of luck, I truly hope by the end of the contest, we will have found REASONABLE affordable alternatives to what you originally posted, and what I have written here...gotta be some options/DIY plans out there somewhere!!! Guarded Kudos to anyone who has a good idea and keeps it to himself till the end, it will certainly give you and edge, and give me fits when it is finally revealed!

Luck to all,

the lights posted above from my previous post are on one of my nano tanks i currently have (not the build off tank)

i have 3 nano's currently and one has a similar light to the one above and the other has a clip on light.

(start up pic)
in the clip on 3 gallon nano i currentlyhave shrooms, zoos, things of that nature. they are doing quite well. i used to have a simple system that came with my aquapod before going to the current power compac's.... I have enjoyed all 3 setups.

You are a genious!!! I have been looking around for something exactly like that, but the closest I could find was around $75 which is about $15-$20 outside of my budget.

I have some other plans, but I may use the MH idea as well. :D Now lets hope the 70w has enough spread to cover the 20". I have to reaserch that one.

My main goal in this contest is to come up with a <$200 tank that can support just about anything, so, although it may come down to softies, I really want to try and get a few sps and maybe a clam later on (after the contest). :D

I may very well be a genius :), but as I am looking for a job at the moment I have plenty of time researching stuff for this contest.

If you do the MH light let me know I might be able to buy ballast and bulb online and we could spit shipping.

AHHHHHH, &*^%^, damn. I should have thought about that, I just got so excited. :(

Sorry man, I already ordered the ballast and bulbs. the shipping was $16.50 for the bulbs and the ballast was $9. (thank god we changed the $200 thing to not include shipping :D) To be fair, I could have done the $3 option, but I am impatient.

Let me check with my friend, he might want to make one too, I will post up this afternoon if he wants to go in.

israel,

Also, post up what you do for a living. there are enough people here that might be able to help find you a job. :D

Ha ha ha ... not a problem. I am going to try and call some local lighting supply stores around town to see if I can find a ballast locally so if your buddy doesn't want to go MH it is not a problem. Plus my tank is going to be around 6 gallons so it will heat up much faster than the people that are going 10, so I may end up doing the PC bulbs.

On another note: Do you still have some PC/T5 ballasts after your VHO upgrade? This is for a tank I am setting up for my brother so I wouldn't be using it in the nano contest.

I would also be interested in splitting shipping on the $50 MH components....though I'm not in the contest. My girlfriend has a 'dream' nano concept she wants to build for our bedroom.

I think I have either 2 or 4 workhorse 5 ballasts not being used at the molment. They will power up to 110watts on PC OR T5's they will NOT power VHO. I will check once I get home and verify what I have.

If anybody else is looking for them, whatever is left over after israel takes his pick, just pm me. :)

Hey all,

Here is an update:

I checked at a few wall marts, Lowes and home depots with no luck on finding the $8.00 floodlight. BUT Home depot DOES have a 500w husky that has the quad reflector for $14.98, and being it uses a 500W bulb, heat is not an issue.

Once you strip all the handles / extras off. the thing only weighs around 1 lb, and eashlly mounts using the included mounting bracket. I think thos will work nice since the light spread is about 20"x12 from a bottom mount of 12" high.

Lastly, all the "horror" stories about the bulbs and ballasts from ballastwise seem to be worked out. I was expecting 6-10 weeks but both items shipped out friday and are expected to get here next thursday. I will hopefully have pictures of everything this friday. :D

I do have to repeat myself though, the 10 gallon tank looks pretty funny with a 15" canopy. the canopy is higher then the tank by 5". But it looks good overall.

israel,

I forgot, I do have 2 workhorst 5 ballasts if you want them. I can bring them to work or you can pick them up tuesday from my house.
(although you will have to break them free of the rivited casing lol...)

I dont mind stopping by your office to pick them up. PM me with the address and if you actually brought them since I am posting at 1am you might not see this until you are at work.

Israel
