Nano Lovers: AQUAPOD 12 or 24G?

Guys,

I am proud to say that I have finally returned to my favorite hobby! As my home is undergoing renovations, I had to break down my 175 bowfront. It is a sad time.
Meanwhile, I miss the hobby and have decided to add a Nano to my office to help with my reef withdrawl symptoms. After reading many posts here, I've decided on the Aquapod. The problem is, I don't know whether to get the 12G or 24G. I prefer the 24G, as the price is only $169.00 and I know that bigger can be better in this hobby. I know about the skimmer fit problems on the AP 12G, and I'm concerned about the 24G breaking. I'm hoping that improvements have been made for 2006. I want only a few fish (1-4), one shrimp, LRock from my 175 tank, live sand, and corals. I'm counting on you guys to help me as, you helped me some 3 years ago with my success in my 175 Bowfront. Thanks in Advance.

I have a 12 gallon aqua pod. It is great. When you say bigger can be better in this hobby i think that is quite opposite. In a 12 gallon all you have to do to mian tian it is a 2 gallon water change every week. You probably can keep 4 fish in a 12 gallon if you have 2 clowns or firefish or something like that, and then you have 2 bottom dwelling fish like blennys and gobys ect.. The skimmer would have to hang over that tank on a 12 gallon or 24 gallon and the aqua pods have lides on them so in order to have a skimmer on ethier one of the tanks you would need to take of the lid and rework the lighting. If you can use water from your 175 gallon to help cycle your tank faster. Also A good choice for a fish is a black perculia clown. Thier really cool little fish.

Thanks for the advice. The difference in the pricing of a 12G or a 24G is $40. Also, when you say I would need to have to remove the hood, is this b/c I would need a HOB skimmer? I'm assumming so. Thanks for your advice. Any others would be greatly appreciated. I plan on placing an order this weekend.

I have the 12 gallon aqua pod as well. My first time with sps. You can check out my pictures. I have a blood red shrimp named Fred. I am not going to put any fish in. I do 2 water changes like hgbarwick...1 gallon on monday and one gallon on friday. I only had a little spot between my computer and table. Had I had a larger space I might have opted for the 24. Best of luck with what ever size you go with.

I have the 24 and love it. I only have 3 scarlet legged crabs, 4 nass snails, 2 margarita snails, and 1 turbo in it for now. I am getting ready to add 1 or two fish to her shortly. I am using this to help when I set up my 175 once we move in july. I have had no issues with the tank, other than the fan being loud when the lights kick on, but that is being fixed by using a different fan. Good Luck, Jon

i would definitely go with the 24, it will offer you much more flexibility fish and invert-wise and will give you more space for more corals and growing room...not to mention the added stability, as bigger IS ALWAYS better stability-wise. good luck, i'm sure you'll do great with it!

Thanks Guys for the good advice. I plan on placing an order, hopefully today as soon as I make my mind up 100%. Are there any other issues I should be aware of such as cracking problems?

You might want to watch out for overheating problems. I had heard people have had thier tanks heating up to 84 in the day and going down to 76 at night. If you add another fan to it it will get to cold. What I did was put my tank under an air vent in my house and positioned the vent to blow down on it. Since I did that my temperature has been 80 sometimes 81. So it stays pretty constant.

Thanks Hgbarwick! The location I will be placing this is under an air vent. Also... what is your stock of inhabitants in your Aquapod 12G?

I currently own a 12g aquapod, I love it but
I would eventually love to upgrade to a 24g , but for now all i can handle is my 12g. Im still a newbie at this hobby, but as i learn more I'll exlpore my options and branch out to a bigger tank. LOL

For my 12 gallon I have black percula clown and about 4 crabs and 4 snials. I plan on adding a Bicolor blenny and a purple fire fish.

I hear that the temperature is easier to control in the 24g since there is twice as much water. I am waiting for mine to arrive. I went with the aquapod to get the current lighting:) Good luck

Yeah but it just depends on what you want to do with your tank. But either way the aqua pod is the best brand out thier

Thnkas Everyone for your awesome advice/input. I have made a committment. I ordered the Aquapod 24G and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. Since then, I have conducted more research and begun to compile a list of what I also want for my new Nano.

I have decided to add the following items to my Aquapod:

1.) Maxi Jet 1200 to replace the original flow source.

2.) Hydor Flo: used to deflect the water & cause water to flow throughout the tank, instead of being concentrated in a single direction. Instead, the Hydor flo rotates in all directions. It is a simple device that hooks on to a powerhead. Many RC members that use it love it and use it in conjunction w/ the Maxi-Jet powerheads.
