Hammbone, up in Ft Collins, has some Siporax beads for sale. They have more surface area than live rock for biological filtration in a tank. It is cost prohibitive for a big tank, unless you are like ReefKoi and have unlimited funds 
but, for smaller tanks they should provide adequite filtration. Any one want to go in on some? I will probably buy some, just for the Pico I am setting up, just don't need a lot. He is selling 5 gallons for $60 which is way less than new for 1 Liter of the beads. LMK if anyone is interested.
