Nano Reef in NYC

Hi everybody. I am going back to school in NYC and I plan on setting up a nano reef in my room. I was wondering if anyone one knows of a good reef store in Manhattan and also how much is live rock and live sand there? I am trying to determine what supplies i should bring and what I should buy there. Thank you.

Im Manhattan you have New World Aquarium on 34th St. Petco on 17th and a few Petland Discounts (72nd, 50th & Nassau St.) You would have better luck in Long Island and NJ. but for a nano those NYC stores should have everything you need. I just had an Acrylic tank made on Canal St. for $65 its about 2/3 gallons. Any sm Mantis shrimp over in LA? :)

Actually I work at a tropical fish store in LA. What kind of mantis shrimp do you want? I might be able to get it for you. I am leaving for New York next monday.

i've been to the petco's and stuff and when i walk in they just scare me the way they keep a few of the fish. Alot of diseases in their tanks so i would be careful buying stuff from them. Got a fish from them about a year ago for my freshwater tank and lost about 200$ worth of livestock in a weekend due to a sick fish. Had 3 very nice discuss too.

New world aquarium is probably your best bet in nyc, little pricey but it has the best kept fish i seen inside nyc. No parking if you drive btw.

Other than them there is a fish store on Delancy street forgot the cross street but they have a very small saltwater selection and the place is a mess, Dead fish in tanks for a few days and the stock doesn;t look too happy. I as in there once took a look at one tank and left. they do have a lionfish about a foot long if your curious in seeing just that though.

If you have a car there is Long island Aquarium adventure in long island, off exit 38 on the northern parkway. Its like the home depot or Lowes of fish stores. I want to take a trip there one day but its like a 45 min ride for me and i'm worried i'll hit traffic the way back and the fish/coral will spend over an hour in the bag while i sit bumper to bumper on the LIE.

Anyways you can try your luck in the petco's and stuff but new world quarium is your best bet if you want good stuff and don;t mind spending a little extra.

Petco gets pretty good things in you just have to get it ASAP. Ive purchased a few things from there with lil problem. Plus you may get a deal if you get the right person. But always know what you want and know about what your getting because they dont know anything about saltwater....I mean fish!

The place on Delancy is Pacific Aquarium. They just started to get saltwater a few months ago. I seen the huge lionfish in the back tank, hes cool looking. The prices arent that good and the selection isnt the greatest either.

New World is the best bet, prices are pretty high the quality is not that bad, its best to take the train tho. I go just about every weekend. The guys will see you and learn to "embrace" you lil by lil.

critmin: any small ones, no peacocks tho.
Neogonodactylus oerstedii
Neogonodactylus wennerae

what kinds to you have/ can get and whats the prices?

We don't have any at my store right now, but I can ask one of my friends to get one at the wholesalers and ship it to me. Do you have any pictures of the ones you want?

The tank I am setting up will be an 18g sps tank without fish. Which of those stores mentioned have a good acropora selection? I plan on getting the tank from petco, but I'm bringing all the other stuff.

New World, and they can get just about anything you need/want as long as your willing to spend the money.

No prob with the mantis, if you happen to come across a small one before you come to NY and you can bring it tht would be good, if not no biggie. I was going to order one online but shipping seems to be more then the shrimp it self.

O if your looking for Acros my friend has a few for sale. You'll have to sign up too Manhattanreefs.com you'll get alot of deals there. What king of lights do you plan on using for your nano?

He works in lower manhattan.
I just got my T-5's from hellolights and my tank looks brand new! (Well it is) I just picked up a fridmani pseud. From petco for $11.99 and some polyps also

I'm in New York now. What is your friend's handle on Manhattan Reefs? Are you on it too? What is your handle? I have the same handle over there. Thanks for all the information.
