Nano Tanks of GIRS

Nice tank man! Thanks for sharing the pictures, too! I see you already have some nice zoas and other softies in there. The top looks kind of bare...are you saving room for SPS? :D

reaquascaping and vacuuming up the sand would do wonders. My biggest pet peeve is that its hard to aquascape and it overflows when I stick my hands all the way in.

Scoop out about a gallon of water before you do. :D

I know the top is bare. Plan was this weekend to take the hairy rock on the bottom to Rockford to hopefully trade along with two of the pink zoo frags. The top rock doing the balancing act was going back to the bottom where the hairy was to make room for a small devils hand and I recently did a trade for some bright green zoos that aren't here yet. My wish list includes lime green ric, deep purple shrooms and some gold sea mat. Not pictured are some bright yellow zoos I just picked up. They are not very happy right now and aren't open to take a pic. I rushed the start and ended up cycling twice. Trying to behave now and go slow. All numbers stable at 0 which is amazing considering the black clown and blood shrimp get fed well every other day by my 6 yr old. Kinda sad to dump the hairy rock as the clown started hosting it this week.

Nice list of things to diversify your tank! I've never heard of gold sea mat before, got a link or a picture of what they look like?

Yeah I think you're better off getting rid of the hair algae plagued rock. Poor clown! You might want to check your phosphate level if you're having hair algae problems. Or change your water more often to help clear it up. Are you using ro/di water for it?

Phos always tests 0. Seems to pretty much leave the big rocks alone and plaques the smaller frags I left in to attach stuff to later. I change 1 1/2 gal a week with very little top off. Lately been topping with SW to try to bring sg up slowly so no tap water.

Gold sea mat: Here is the best picture I've found of the color and shape I want. You'll have to scroll down about 1/2 the page to see the pic.

Those are neat polyps! I like the larger polyps like that. It's a shame they don't come in more varieties like zoanthids.

So no tap water and no detectable phosphate eh? Weird. It's hard to say what's causing it then if your tank is already cycled and everything is good. What's the TDS on your ro/di water?

Sorry, went off looking for wish list stuff. Two days ago I saw the neatest single ric -- Was green and purple with a fushia mouth. Wanted to go back and order it but now can't find. Must have sold.
Oh well.

Have no idea TDS on water and I'm for bed so no testing tonight.

If it's that colorful, it must've came from Refermadness or Atlantis Aquariums. Another place that has nice rics is Phishy Business.

Bigblue, look slike those green palathoas are doin' good hope you picked most of the caulerpa off of them.........

Nice looking tanks! So how small does a tank have to be to be considered a nano?

Hmm compared to the ocean anything shy of Sheed aquarium is a nano....

Seriously - this debate cracks me up (like sandbed v no sand and/or glass v acrylic).

Hmmm so I am now thinking it is time to do a water change and get some nice pics of my 26 gallon flat back hex....

Great looking tanks so far...

I've been doing nano-reef's for a little over 3 years. My 15 gallon is still going. I've been running a Coralife 2x65 compact flourescent, a cpr hang on refugium and 2 minijets on a wavemaker. This tank has been up since Jan 2004, here's the current look.

The green palathoas are doing great. I pulled off most of the caulerpa. Right after I put the palathoas in the tank my hermit crabs were all over it. Woke up the next day and they must have ate the rest because there was hardly any left on the rock.:D

Get on it OA. The more the merrier! :) It seems like there's a bunch of nanos on GIRS but no one ever talks about them.

So Al...I'm just not seeing a cleanup crew in there. What's up with that? J/K, looks great! I need to get a cleanup crew for mine as well.

You should put some more nice zoas in there that I've been reading about. That should kick it up a notch!

I'm going to get some more zoas and rics/shrooms. I had about 14 colonies going but had a bad run in with some heliacus snails. I thought they were pretty interesting until I found zoo polyps all over the sand bed.

What kind of snails were they? Sundials? I had some once in my old tank, they munched on some nice zoas before I caught them!

Yes, heliacus (sundial) snails. I lost $130.00 worth of zoos, before I figured out the pretty the pretty little snails were the culprit. Now I dip all new zoos in freshwater with a little lugols and flatworm exit. Experience is the best teacher.

I hear ya. They don't like the brown or less desirable zoas either, they go after the blue, red or whatever else is colorful! I've learned my lesson as well.

Just wanted to update this thread with the Tunze nano skimmer I got last week. It's taken about a week of it to fully break in. It works as an in-tank skimmer and was pretty easy to hook up with the mounting screws that comes with it.

This is a day's worth of skimmate. It's pretty light but I don't really have a heavy bio-load in there with two small black perculas and a blenny. I think I have it dialed in to where I want it now. I'm trying to skim a little wet to remove as much wasted as I can. I don't think it'll benefit me by skimming dry on a tank this small. I will say the skimmer works well for what is it but is pretty sensitive to change in the surface tension of the water. The foam head collapses quickly if you put your hand in the tank or when you feed.

Pretty cool!!! How does it operate, venturi? It looks like it's skimming kind of wet, amazing how the nutrients accumulate.
