Nanocube clams

What kind of clams could you keep in a jbj nanocube? and what other requirements might they have?

As long as it is an appropriate size, you can pretty much keep any tridacna in a nano. They require a mature tank, strong lighting ( requirements differentiate depending on which clam you choose),stable calcium levels around 400-450ppm, and pristine water parameters, to begin with. Clam size also determines whether occasional live phyto feedings would be recommended.

In a nano-cube with stock lighting, you should stick with H. Hippopus only. If you upgrade the lighting you can get others, depending on what upgrade you do. All of what was posted above is important too.

If you upgrade the stock 24w lighting to say a CSL 2x32w retro and place the clam up at least mid height, you can probably keep a Derasa or Squamosa also. But these clams grow very large & would out grow the 12g nano cube in a short time. I've tried a small Maxima with this setup and even with phyto feedings, the clam (1.5") did not survive past 2 months.

Also, in a nano, your calcium and alk can be depleted rapidly by a growing clam. Must be constantly monitored.
