man, I know everyone is posting how adorable those things are, but they freak me the hell out. I just imagine walking into the room, and that thing going all face hugger on me, while i flail around blind.

Sump Pump Update!

Okay, after thinking it over with everyones help, I have decided to go with a Mag 5 pump for my return. But this causes another problem. The nozzle on this pump is 1/2" and the nozzle on my return bulkhead is 3/4".

I guess I need an adapter? Would this work:

The Mag 5 will be fine. You can buy bushings at Home Depot that ramp it up to a larger size.

I would put a bushing on the pump, then a union, then the plumbing up to the bulkhead. As far as I'm concerned, you could even use 3/4" thinwall (used in sprinkler systems) to get the most flow out of your pump. Everything you need is in the plumbing section at Home Depot.

Nanogurl those mag pumps are loud. Ever consider the Eheim pumps? They are much more silent and very reliable. Getting a pump that has a higher GPH rating would be best to get more water flowing in the sump.

There is no need to "get more water flowing in the sump." Why would you need flow in that section? The water needs to be skimmed (contact time is important), and microbubbles have time to rise and pop.

Eheims are better pumps, reputation-wise. But you only need enough to get the water back up to the tank while still maintaining enough flow to assure the overflow won't lose siphon. In this case, the tank is drilled so that issue isn't even an issue.

I dose everything in there straight in. With less flow I have found the stuff being dosed does not dissolve as fast. That and the skimmer did a better job. I have the skimmer set-up with direct feed now which improve my skim even more. I get a nice wet but still very dark skim.

Then again, its all up to her:D

less flow also means less noise and microbubbles from your drain. i've own both a mag 7 and a eheim 1260, both are very quite. i can barely hear the noise from either one.

but if your spending your boyfriend's money then go with the eheim...:)

your zebra eel is gorgeous, are they safe with snails and smaller fish? how big was he and how long have you had him?

Thanks everyone. I have a mag 9.5 right now running and it's too powerful for my setup. It *does* work, but not in my opinion the way it should.

I was thinking about the Ehiem 1250.. seems to me that it is kinda between a Mag 5 and Mag 7. The Mag drive that I have has worked perfectly for me in my other tanks, and never caused any noise issues. I've never had a Ehiem pump, but have read good things about them. Maybe I'll try one.

Okay, cool thank you! That will make life much easier then trying to figure out what to order online.

I agree. You'll have plenty of supplimental flow from your Tunzes in the display. But you already knew that. :D

Yes I did! Wonder where I learned that from????? :)

lol :)

Thank you! Yes, they are typically very lazy eels and if you train them to eat food from a tong and keep them well fed they won't bug anything in your tank. Mine is very sweet. He does not eat any fish or snails, though I have not tried a live shrimp in there yet. A couple of times a dumb fish has gotten like right into his mouth after food when I feed him and he never tries to eat them. He's very shy and sweet and much cooler then my snowflake eels I've had in the past.

I bought him from Live Aquari'as Diver Den section back in Mid January. He was about 20" when I got him and he's grown a bit now. Filled out nicely after all the food I fed him to catch him up.

Here are some photos from the day I got him:
