NanoGurl where did you get the fire and ice zoos, they are sweet?...

Dave

LiveAquaria has them all the time in various morphs and sizes.

Tuesday Update!

Well I decided to go ahead and start working on the Flatworm project. I took Marc's advice (great info ty!) and started to siphon out the FW's.

I took airline tubing that drained into an old 5g bucket. I used this as my water change. I did one bucket tonight, and I will do another tomorrow.

I went through and sucked the FW's that I could see off the rocks and corals and sandbed. It's really gross. I did a pretty good job of what I could get too, but a couple of hours later it looked like they were all back all over.

So I'll be ordering some FW Exit when I order my Tunze Top-off finally this week.

Here is a photo after I was done siphoning.

Now, my next question. What is the best way for me to run Carbon for the FW Exit? I need to get some, I don't have any.

NanoGurl may I ask what white balance setting you use on your Nikon to get such good color of your fish and tank shots?

If you can get your boyfriend to be a spotter, that really makes your job as Siphon Gurl easier. ;) Keep doing this daily until you've depleted their existence substantially.

I would run carbon in a Phosban Reactor. That is your best bet with the most bang for your buck.

G'day Ng,

I've never had flatworms, and from what I'm seeing, touch wood I hope not to get them. Any idea how they got into your tank? Good luck with getting the bugga's out :)

Cheers

Chris

I wish I knew! I take so many photos under different light it makes it hard. Most of the shots are no flash normal settings.. but some have been tweaked. I'm still trying to figure it all out.

I want to get a new macro lense really bad!

How would I run it in a Phosban Reactor? Would I just fill the tube with loose carbon? What kind of carbon should I get?

Thnx! Pretty sure I got them on a piece of LR from LFS back when I had the nano. Didn't know what FW's were, so I just placed them into my 75 and they went out of control very quickly. I should have spotted them but I didn't know what to look for.

Yeah, you would just put the carbon in the phos reactor, I actually ran carbon and phosban in my reactor at the same time on my last tank.

ditto with the reactor. I usually run both but am dealing with some hair right now, so straight up phosban. Be sure to get the right sized pump. I think I have a minijet something-or-other, with variable output.

NG, don't delay on the flatworm exit. Those little guys can really multiply.
You can run carbon in a sock made for that and it will work fine. Just place it in a high flow part of your sump. The reason you run carbon is that the FW's if allowed to stay in the tank after death will emit a toxin. The carbon catches the toxin.

I had a FW issue when I brought home a zenia patch. Before I knew it they were multiplying like bunny rabbits. I used a 5 gallon bucket with rigid airline tubing (same kind used with the ro/di system). Have the bucket, tubing, additional water to add back, all ready to go. Have your BF help you, I had my wife as spotter.

When you introduce the FW exit into the tank the FW's will start dieing instantly. Have the siphon ready to go and start chasing them around the tank. It will also help if you use a filter sock at the drain pipe in the sump to catch those that go over the falls. I use filter floss so that caught any I missed.

It was kinda fun for my wife and I as we chased them around with the hose.... here's one...there's one....ew ew ew over here....quick over here, holy smokes where are they all coming from?? It was over in about 15 minutes.

Add back in your make-up water and just stick around ready to grab the stragler. It's really not that big a deal. I was lucky and the first treatment was the only one needed. That and my six line wrasse solved the problem.

Cool, I have an old one laying around. Thanks!

Thanks, I'm pretty sure the one I have has it's own pump? Maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks for the great info :)

I am going to try and get out as many as I can prior to dosing. I just can't believe how many I got out yesterday, and today it looked like I didn't even do anything!

I know I let it go too long :(

No worries. Just keep siphoning them out every day. You'll definitely put a dent in their population if you keep at it.

The Phosban Reactor holds up to 3 cups of carbon. You can use any carbon sold for aquarium use, and even Walmart has a private label brand that is supposedly the same as Black Diamond from the LFS. It will need a tiny pump to move water through the reactor, so a MiniJet or MaxiJet 600 would be fine. The reactor comes with a ballvalve that goes on the input side so you can slow the flow going in to the reactor.

As the other person stated, when you do start to treat your tank be ready to siphon them out of the system during their death throes. You want to extract them and their toxin quickly, so siphon them into a bucket rather than into a sock in the sump. You'll see them dying, flapping in the flow on a web-like string. Siphon any you can see. That limits the amount of toxins released.

If you still see some a few days later, treat the tank again while they are still weak.

Wednesday Update!

I got my order in today from FraggleReef.com! I have been waiting forever for Miguel to get back in his RBTAs... and I got lucky and was able to get one.

Everything was well packed and came in great shape. He even threw in a couple of freebies. Great guy and thanks Miguel!

We got some new shrooms, few zoas and the RBTA green base. I couldn't get any good shots of the zoas, but I will and will post them when I can. We got some Bam Bams, Artic Moons, Dragon Eyes and some pretty freebie frags.

Picture of the RBTA green base.
