For sure! Let us know =)

Google "rabbit fish envenomation"

While not fatal it is just painful for most. We have never dealt with any "fish" allergy or envenomations at our facility (but we have dealt with plenty of vespid issues) Unless you have a specific allergy to the toxin, you are likely only going to be pretty sore from the wound.

I have been nailed by a lionfish and frankly it is not worth any amount of hand feeding for me to go that route again. I got nailed while cleaning a tank and believe me, one time is one time too many...

Ditto.

That envenomation event was quite possibly the most painful experience of my life. I was not punctured, merely grazed, while cleaning. It was on the knuckle of my thumb and I still have a scar (and the reminder).

Geeze Eric, I get the impression one day we just won't hear from you all of a sudden. Mean Tank owners don't live long. Be careful, will ya?

I will certainly be careful. Mean??? THe fish I feed him are dead silver shads. I have also had him dip down when I was cleaning the tank. I always wondered how bad it would hurt. Hearing what you guys have said, I will for sure keep my distance. it is just sometimes he doesn't eat fast enough before the other fish get to it. So I try to put it closer. The other guys are hogs. Thanks for the info.

do they attack?
Lionfish seem relatively territorial when it comes to things bigger than the individual fish. I suspected that it was a response to protecting their perceived food supply (and their life). While I wouldn't say that they attack, they do fan and tilt towards "threat". The danger seems to be that turning for many species of lionfish is not as nimble as a sportscar... more like a semi-truck. That's how I got nailed; the turn.

My Volitans, years ago, would "display" towards my Niger Trigger any time the trigger came towards the lionfish's end of the tank. It didn't seem to have much meaning to the trigger but that didn't dissuade the lionfish; his envenomed spines were always faced towards the trigger, big fins spread wide, if the trigger approached closer than half a foot.

It was quite interesting to watch.

erics3000: After my incident, I used tongs. I hand-fed for the same reasons.

the sensation.... lets see... smash hand with hammer while dumping tabasco in your eye... now that we are about halfway there....

I don't often graphically repeat my "bad" experiences but I think that description would be more accurate as I corrected... ;)

My thumb looked like an overstuffed sausage, simmered just below boiling, in a pot tinted red with Easter Egg dye of a vivid shade of red.

Enough of that remembering for me... Seriously, fish with venom must be presumed "guilty" beofre the fact. I am not sure it is entirely possible to be careful enough. I still shudder a bit to think that I had no way of knowing beforehand if I might be one of the rare ones who finds the hard way about an allergy to that venom.

A little off topic. Once I had A Burito and this place had super super hot sauce. The lady at the register said make sure you wash your hands. I though to myself What is She Talking About.. yeah I am going to wash my hands. Not realizing what she was talking about. So my friend and I ate our food I could not use the sauce it was too hot.

Anyway my friend and I leave. I guess I must have scratched my eye. I wear contacts. Just a few minutes later we were stuck in traffic and my eye was burning out of the socket. I was tearing and everything. I have never felt anything like that in my eye before. It was so bad I was worried about permante damage. I pulled my contact out and it was worse. We finaly made it to a Drug Store where I could clean my eye. I remember my friend had to help me in the store, What an Ordeal. it was funny as heck. It hurt so bad I was almost crying..

If you had an allergy to the venom, it would likely be systemic = fall down gagging for air and die.... :) Normal reaction = wish you could die

I have nothing further to add other than this:

When my father kept his FO with lions and groupers, my job was to use a large net to keep the lion at one end of the tank while he cleaned the other side. That was my only job, and there would have been heck to pay if I didn't focus only on that fish for the duration. He never got stung, and I never disobeyed him.

The 'mean' comment was in reference to 'mean' fish - rather than calling them predatory. I hadn't had my morning coffee yet. Yeah. That's it. ;)

Thanks everyone for the info. I am glad I caught all this info. I have had him for 2 1/2 years and been getting to comfortable with him.

Do you still want the fox NanoGurl?

Foxface is a fun reef tank fish, love the colors and that they do their black/white thing... mine used cozy up with a pirate I had in the tank everynight to sleep... maybe I can find a photo of it

Yea =) I think it would be a nice addition to the tank with Ocean. I am not going to stress him with any other tangs... and a lot of the other fish I like are coral pickers...

I may buy a small one and add him, but we are trying to make plans now for the new tank when we move.

I think we are just going to start with a 125. To do the 240 would over extend us a bit too much right now. I hate making decisions!

Decisions. Decisions..I hear you it is rough when you get a new house. Depending on what furniture your taking and all. Then you gota get blinds, fans, paint, yada yada yada $ $ $ $ $

I know.. we have like 30 windows alone... so that's like $3000 to $5000 just for blinds if we go with real nice ones!!! Are you kidding me!?!?!?

We've decided to make clown install the flooring and tile to save money LoL. But then we need a fence, maybe a deck, a garage door opener, spare room set, etc etc etc... hmmm anyone wanna buy a tank?????
