Nanostream 6025 Noise

I just bought two of these. The noise surprised me, one louder than the other, but even the quieter one is not acceptable. I've used Maxijet 1200s and Hydor Korallia powerheads previously - never heard more than a faint hum from them. The Maxis just went back in my tank. What to do about the noise from the Nanostreams - is it supposed to go away by itself or what?

On one of the 6025s, the front part of the cage has a broken tab, can this be replaced?... I thought at first that maybe that's why one powerhead is louder, but it turned out that's the quieter one.
Another thing, I put both 6025s in a bucket of water to run overnight to see if that might quiet them. After disassembling them and reassembling them to see if anything was loose, I found a small steel washer in the bucket, looks like the one at the base of the steel shaft. Both 6025s have theirs, so I'm not sure where the washer came from, except that I know its from one of the 6025s.

There should be just one stainless steel disk at the bottom of the shaft under the prop assembly. I would suspect the extra loose disk got in the pump during assembly and probably was the main source of noise. They do tend to be louder at first due in part to needing to wear in, air in the pumps and the bit of vaseline they use to pretest them at the factory. Be sure the rubber feet are on the magnet holder to help dampen the transmission of vibration. If it is a very small tank with thin glass you might put a small neoprene pad between the magnet and glass to help as well. Something like a 10gal will vibrate much more than say a 50 gallon due to the thin glass. If you PM me your info I can send a new cover after the holiday.

The Nanostreams, after running for a few days in a 5 gallon bucket, quieted down so that they can no longer be heard. They are silent in my tank. I noticed that they did not warm the water in the bucket, so that will be that much less heat added to the tank. Thanks again for replacing the damaged front cover.

Al
