Narcissistic Crab

We have a crab that came with our Tampa Bay Saltwater shipment that is quite the character but we haven't been able to identify him. He has the characteristics of a decorator crab, but the shape more like an arrow crab. He routinely changes his outfit about every other day. We really enjoyed his Geronimo outfit when he had a bit of plant that looked like a feather on his head. He has now taken to dressing in zoos. We get such a kick out of him, we hate to move him, but don't want him taking snips and bits of everything. He is all over the tank, is quite the acrobat, and fearless.

If we could ID him, perhaps we could learn more about him so we could provide him with an environment that would keep him stimulated without butchering our corals!

The picture is of the back of him, he refused to turn around. I will try later for a better shot.

that looks like a decorator crab. maybe a Huenia sp.. theres not a lot that can be done to keep them from hacking up a coral to use for camouflage, its just their nature. you have to decide if the small amount of coral damage they will do is worth keeping the crab. but dont kill it if you decide you dont want it. take it to a LFS or trade it off to someone local that may want it.

Would never kill it! Maybe he will like life in the refugium with lots of plants to dress in.

that would work. they are interesting creatures , but i have a soft spot for the crabs LOL.

i think the refugium would be a good spot for him, as well as it foraging for leftover food that flows to the refugium.
