im looking for a skimmer for my 110 gallon sps tank. it will be a bare bottom tank, but will also have xenia/ macros for nutrient export in the sump/ fuge.

ive narrowed it down to 2 skimmers.

the MR-1 with a gen-x 6000 pump
mr-1

or

the octopus NW- 200
nw-200

which do you think would be best for my situation, and is there something you would reccomend over these two for the tank im planning? or is neither one strong enough for the tank?

thanks

i just sold my MR1, i am not trying to get you to change your mind. But the MR beckett skimmers need constant adjusting to get the good skimmate that you want

Not my experience with becketts. They require adjustment to get set, but not after that. I don't think there is a skimmer out there that works faster. I have a Barr skimmer on order from Austin Oceans right now. I ordered the 2000. They come with air flow meters and dispersion plates standard and the twist lock feature is awesome. If you don't mind spending a bit more I would go that route. http://austinoceans.com/products-skimmers.html#Bookmark-StandardSkimmer

devilboy: which skimmer did you switch too?

sherm: looks like a nice skimmer, but its kinda pricey. its gunna run me like 550 with the pump.

any other suggestions?

yea, i know. going BB, you cant skip on anything. its just everytime i pick a skimmer i find a bunch of people who dont like it for some reason or another and then i get chased away from it.

anyobdy else have input on the mr2?

cool. i think im gunna go with the mr2. not a lot more money and it will hopefully get the job done.

thanks for your help.

I would get the NW-200, its $220 and you can mod it increase performance. Becketts are very powerful skimmers, but they tend to be loud and inefficient.

any input on the tunze DOC skimmer 9010? i know tunze makes good products, but never hear about ther skimmers.

The skimmer has gotten positive reviews, but there are better options IMO. Octopus skimmers are very good for the price, in fact, I don't think there is a skimmer that can produce as well for the price.

Loud, maybe. If you don't muffle the input or have a noisy pump they can be. Inefficient? I disagree. There are differences between beckett and nw skimmers for sure, but the high turnover rate of a beckett equates to faster skimming. You don't get that from a nw skimmer.

so your saying go with the NW 200 over the mr2. then do the mesh wheel mod, or whatever its called. this is going to be able to handle a 110 BB tank.

I have a beckett skimmer for sale. It looks just like the mr1 or mr2 I have to measure it. I am not sure the brand - It is in great shape and I will sell it for 150. I am in deer park.

Sherm71tank- I won't debate anything as there have been a multitude of threads arguing the differences between beckett and NW and I don't think that starting another one is going to do any good.
