So, I'm at nearly a month now, and no sign of ich. Not a single spot, not a single "dusky" looking fish. Everybody is fat and happy and looking great. My tank bred "mocha" clowns are even starting to be hosted in my 12" RBTA I got from Sue. The tank is looking fantastic. Hitchiker sponges everywhere, a huge pod population, water clear as glass even when I overfeed like crazy (and I no longer rinse my hikari products, going for almost a week now.)
My flame angel still has some scarring. Evidently Cupramine is not as friendly to them as rumored. She's looking a LOT better after lots of attention from my cleaner shrimp, though.
Her behavior has changed. She's swimming much more actively than ever before, and totally ignores me at mealtime (though she does eat.) I'm not sure if her brains got cooked, or what. She's fat and healthy looking despite the new behavior and facial/gill scarring. I feel really terrible that she got sick. Will be much more careful with any new additions from now on (although, I'm fully stocked at present.)
To your original post, I think we are all skating on the thin edge of disaster. No matter how much one plans and attempts to think through potential design weaknesses, pumping water through plastic pipes into a water-filled glass tank held together with rubber is inherently risky. But luck does help ...
I recently went away for a week and one of my PVC fittings cracked (too much Teflon tape apparently) and squirted water onto the floor. Enough of the water sprayed onto the cord to trip the GFI, so the tank did not desalinate. Phew!
Also, your experience supports my contention that it is risky to buy used tanks - particularly big ones. I shut down my 180 five years ago because, at 10 years of age, I worried that it was going to give out.
Lol very cool.
How unlevel was the tank? Mine is about a quarter to half inch off from the left to right. I'm hoping that since mine is a 29g and brand new this isn't gonna be an issue for us....ever!!!! Ahhhh!
