Naso getting streamers

I was looking in the beady eyes of my naso as it was begging for food today when I noticed that the tips of its tail appear to be extending (particularly the bottom tip which is probably about 1/4" longer than I remember it being). I won't say with 100% certainty yet, but it does look very promising to me. We'll see over the next few weeks/months.

I've looked around a bit and haven't been able to find anything that would let you tell a male naso from a female before the males get streamers at sexual maturity (apparently not all of them do get streamers either, so having a male naso with streamers is most excellent!)

There's a snowball's chance of getting a good pic of it, but we're trying as we speak. Didn't think it needed pics... just a little extra skin hanging off the back fin...

It was really hard to get a picture that shows their full length (they still look longer in person) because when the tail moves toward you, the end of the tails bends away, so you have to get the picture just when the tail is at rest between oscillations... and since we all know that tangs almost never stop swimming, I think you'll appreciate the difficulty of that.

We got ours when he was still a baby, 4 years later he's gotten a lot bigger, but no streamers yet, hoping though.....

I think RevHTree got this when it was small, passed it on to Angela, and then its on to me. So I figure it has to be at LEAST 3 years old and maybe closer to 5 or more (not sure how long the Rev had it-- maybe he will respond). There seems to be very little on the internet about when they develop them, which seems like something aquarists should be able to figure out (although the timing could be different for a wild specimen of course).

Wow Brian! I hope "she" grows streamer for you and turns out to be a "he" I always refered to her (the naso) as a her for some reason and the mean powder blue as a him maybe since she was so docile and sweet and he was such a bully..... he just seemed like a he to me and her a she .
Hmmm, I got her, or shall we say "the fish" right after Hanna was born in June of 06. Like you, not sure how long Rev had the fish but I know it was in a 125 and grew VERY fast in the 2 years I had her....him....... Darn..., "the fish" :lol:

I think its funny we subconcieously (I know that is spelled wrong!) give our fish genders and human qualitys when they are just a fish. I wonder how much of the fish recognizing the owner is true fish personality or just imprinting or whatever its called where they just see a person as a big goofy food dispencer and act accordingly to get a bite of food. How much is instinct and how much is higher level brain functioning? Just a thought while I am scanning over the past 3 months of whats been happening in the club since I have been totally off line.

The naso is a HORSE of a fish!! He/she eats like a monster that's never been fed before - been teaching the other fish to act the same I think. I love that we have fish that eat out of our hands...I'm such a little kid at heart.

Ours do the same, he acts like he's staving to death and steals food away from everyone else..... This Naso is a special fish for us since I had to save his life at one point when we first got him. He was very ill with ich and was skin and bones laying on the bottom of the tank lifeless. I started feeding him garlic foods on a daily basis 4+ times per day dipping my hands into the tank and feed right by his mouth and he took it from me. And I was feeding LOTS of food at a time cause I want to make sure he gets enough food. In 3 days he perked up and starting eating good for me, one week he was gaining lots of weight, in one month he was in good health but his color was very faint until I fed him algae sheets and bam his colors are back. Now he is one fat happy fish almost 4 years later and he is not afraid of my hands in the tank. He is my favorite fish cause we share memories together...
