Naso Tang not doing well

My Blonde Naso lost interest in food. On Friday he ate like a pig and for the past two days he is not eating anything. I tryed different foods. He has no signs of anything being wrong, but now his stomach is getting thin. Read in the Natural Reef Aquriums book "public aquriums records indicate that tangs can live 5 to 7 years". I had him for almost 6 years and he was the same size as I got him, so I am assuming he was full grown. Could he just be old and that's the problem? It just seems strange that he quit eating from one day to another. Also not really sold on the idea, that they can live 5 to 7 years, because I have a huge purple tang for almost 10 years and he is doing just fine. Any thoughts?

Man, I just went through the same thing about a month ago. I had a Naso, 12", for about a year. I added a 12" Passer angel, and he kept eating like a pig for about 2 weeks after, then all of a sudden, hunger strike!!!

I read all I could. In my reading I found that for what ever reason, they (Naso's) will do this from time to time. It might be caused by adding a new fish, change in water chemistry, moving a rock, moving a power head, water temp, sick, ect....

My stopped eating and hung out in front of the Tunze fan for about a week. He stopped swimming and became VERY thin. I tried every Nori sheet (brown, red, green) out there, shrimp, clams, you name it I tried it. He had no interest at all. I was very careful not to over feed to much and make the water go bad. I also did 10% water changes evey week.

I tested the water everyday to make it as perfect as I could. Even hooked up another skimmer. I did use Selcon and put it directly in the tank, because fish do drink, so he would still be getting something of value. I did this every other day. Read the bottle on amount per gallon.

When I put in the Nori, I rubbed it with my fingers to make it very fine, then one day, (thank God) he ate a little. Then the next day a little more Nori, then some flakes....

Now he is back to normal eating everything in sight and swimming around just like he use to. His hunger strike last 10 days before he started eating a little. Again, thank God , when this started he was nice and fat.

Hopefully yours, won't last that long. I was very stressed. My Passer had flukes and the Naso was ticked off at something. Both have made it through.

Thanks for your response! My Water is okay, the only thing I did, was a week ago, adding a new Hydor Koralia4 for waterflow. He seem to like it. I've done the nori, selcon and so on. I sure hope mine will start eating again soon. He looks okay, but he doesn't swim around so much, more behaving like at night when their sleeping standing in one spot. Man, he is such a sweet fish.

Mine did that when he had some sort of velvetty rash, he would almost turn black. Just kept well him fed and he is doing great now. I dont know if this helped him or not but I fed him garlic cloves and he loves it. I would just crush a clove of garlic and feed the fish and all my tangs love it.

Thank you guys. After hearing your stories I was really hoping for the best and I am happy to tell you, that he is eating again. Like nothing was ever wrong!? Strange, but I am so glad that he's okay. I am a strong believer in garlic. Never crushed a clove before, always used the liquid form, but once that is gone I am switching to fresh garlic.
