naso tang

Has anyone else had bad luck with naso tangs. I went through three of them so far and havent been able to keep one more then a week. they dont seem to eat. I currently have a blue hippo tang, yellow tang, and a clown fish. I REALLY want a blonde naso or naso. The last one the lfs said they had it for a couple weeks and it was eating fine there but when i put it in my tank it died like 2 days later. I think my clown fish had it scared and pinned in the corner. If i went with a bigger thank to give them more room do you think they would be less aggressive towards them?

Profile says 55 with a 20 gallon sump.
Still that's no reason to lose 3.
You lfs must love you.
I don't mean to be an *** but....well

it was from two differant stores. the first one lasted about a week or two but just wouldnt eat. I tried real algae and it would nibble on some of it but wasnt eating enough to survive. ok maybe it was only two of them cause the second one lasted 2 days. I really want one but am a little gun shy after loosing two of them. my tank is a 55 gallon but i really want to upgrade to around 200 gal.

about 35 miles north of madison moved here about 3 months ago from Connecticut. by the way maybe the naso is getting bullied in a smaller tank.

Tangs need a lot of space in the aquarium to swim and behave as they would in the ocean. This is why tangs, especially the Naso, are recommended to be housed in large tanks (180+gallons). I have one tang in my 75 and I feel like i'm pushing it. If the hippo and yellow are happy then you're lucky. I don't think that your loss of a third Naso tang is because the tang is generally a hard fish to keep or because of bad luck, but rather the result of the size and stock of your tank. Live aquaria recommends 180 gallons for a Naso. To answer your question; yes, a larger tank would be better if you wanted a Naso. Killing three Naso tangs is so upsetting and irresponsible.

Sounds like you have some kind of parasite in your tank that's kills pretty fast like oodinium(velvet). Also don't recall you mention a qt . If your putting fish in your dt directly from your lfs, you're making a huge mistake.

Is it common to loose new fish? The people I talk to make it sound like a common thing. Such as powder blues, naso's, etc. the harder fish or is that more of a water and tank condition issue? I've been told you get some that come staight from the ocean and just won't adapt to the tank.

There ares some fish that dont ship as well or are recommended for "expert care and prestine water" but a Naso tang is certainly not one of those. If anything i find Naso's to be one of the hardier tangs. I've had a blond Naso for three years now. he was eating as soon as i put him in the QT. Either your LFS is selling you sick fish or something is very wrong with your water. Losing 3 Naso's in a row is certainly not considered common but rather that an existing problem needs to be addressed.
