i have very nasty crap in my sump. i have some cyano some brown hairy algea type thing i forget the name of. and in the walls of my refuge only i have green slime algea, cyano, more brown hairy algea and these nasty bubble things. looks like a poluted water dump in the fuge. i added macro algea and a green grape vine looking plant or algea that i also forget the name of but its good to feed my tangs, about 2 weeks ago and added chaeto this weekend. but my question is what are those nasty looking bubbles? i dont have any in the display tank but hoping it wont get to the display tank. tank is 6 months old. sump is about 3. alli have in my tank is some diatom lightly spread on my sand bed. any thoughts?

Pictures if you can. And the green grape vine is possibly caulerpa which you really don't want unless the fish are actually eating it away. If they aren't it will overgrow your tank and you'll never get it out.

I don't have a fuge. Personally I think they are a ticking time-bomb. I completely tear down my whole sump and clean everything every three months. Just did it today. The amount of crap that collects in a sump is amazing. A fuge just hides it until tic tic tic boom

All that stuff is eating the nutrients you don't want in the DT. It's a good thing. You need to carefully remove the bubbles though. That's bubble algae. You can find horror stories on here about it taking over DTs. Don't pop the bubbles because they have spores in them that will get into the display. What I have found for keeping a healthy fuge is dropping some of your clean up crew in there from time to time to clean things up and then bring them up top again when things are back under control. You getting in there and making a mess of things releases crap back into the water. Slow moving snails and a small hermit or two is much more delicate. Don't put a hermit in there if you have a manderin or anything that needs pods to live, hermits will eat them up quick.

haaa. people spend hundreds of bux, and time to build algae turf scrubbers...when you do your water changes, pump out from your sump, get all the detritus out.....every now and then, throw a maxijet down there before you go to bed, stir it up a bit.

I think the key is being consistent. If you don't stir it up often the mass of organics going into the water table could be too great and you will creat spikes in nutrients. If you stir it up regularly than there is no large mass to stir up only small pockets. If you don't do it often enough (like me) you need to treat it more gently as to not have a sudden spike of nasty organics and nutrients messing up your chemistry. I'm a lazy reefer and just let the critters go to town from time to time.

i havent cleaned it since i put to work. this just started about 3 weeks ago i had nothing to clean. but then boom in about 1 week it full of crap. am ging to clean it up this weekend. thinking about adding some puragin in between one of the baffles to absorb some of this stuf. wont hurt anything right?
