natural sunlight

im interested in experimenting with a small outdoor SW pond and wondering if natural sunlight or the UV rays hurt fish or coral in any way?

No they wont, Sunlight is the best type of lighting you can have. Someone did do this but he moved his tank outside and had great results. That is until the tank got too hot.
Also cold nights might be a problem, as well as rain.

The Florida Aquarium in Tampa has 10 or more outdoor saltwater tanks. They are incredible. They look like freshwater tanks at the zoo, but they have saltwater fish swimming around. Really neat. They have a bunch of Mangrove trees planted in them for filtration.

You don't say where you are, MEGuppy, but a big deluge is a problem, and way pricey in salt. Plus there's winter. I'll guess you're a little south of Spokane. Mangrove would be a real plus.

When I kept a pool in Oklahoma, one of the frog-strangler rains would be a major headache for the swimming pool: guaranteed green jello, in all that sunlight, if you didn't get to it fast.

im in so cal, and im not trying to make a HUGE pond. just one about 100 gals, also a lfs gives a good discount if u buy alot of salt, $5 on 50g mix if u buy 3 or more bags. i should be able to set up a portable green house if necessary.
