naughty's bc 14!!

hey guys!!! got some updates, i left the tank alone for a day for the first time :p it survived :) i on the other hand, can barely move, snowboarding is a ***** to learn....

my ammonia and nitrites are zero, nitrates are still high even after the water change though... do you guys think 20 ppm of nitrates is high enough to need a water change?

also, i moved the rock a bunch, i figured i'll be doing that a lot especially when the new stuff comes in (next friday! :p). the light was off though, so i decided to have some fun with the moonlights (finally got myself a tripod so my crappy camera can pretend like it can take pictures in the dark)

enjoy!

love the comments, keep them coming!
:inlove:

hehe well i have much more of an incentive to update if i get comments :p
hmmm let's see....

tank is chillin under the moonlights right now, but i can take a couple pictures later tonight...

my nitrates have been climbing a bit but other than that it seems to be doing good, one of the inhabitants ate all my green macro algae, i'm sad, it was cool looking... i'm not sure who the criminal is, maybe the urchins or a crab or the shrimp that's clicking away in there... :lmao: little does it know i ordered a trap for it :lolspin:

i found a couple tentacles sticking out in the night, i think it may be some sort of aiptasia/curley cue, something like that, are those mainly nocturnal? so far there's just two on one rock and i'm not too worried since i'm getting a peppermint shrimp on friday with the rest of my rock and cuc! :spin1:

ordered a light for chaeto in the back as well, one of the little 1 led submersible ones :) should be cool!

here are a couple pictures of what i think is the bad anemone, this had to be taken w/ flash and lights off and it's towards the back of the tank so the pictures are crappy, but is it what i think it is?

oh and i found a real cute tiiiny blue crab, but he does have black on the tip of one of its claws, is it bad???

it sure does look like apatasia to me and the pepermint should eat it all up and as for the suspect on the chaeto i think it might be the urchin if i am not mistaken but someone with more experience will let you know it looks awesome to me i cant wait to build my tank i think im going to do a different aquascape and start over we will see how it is though when i get home wish me luck

all crabs are bad, the safest is the emerald and they go rouge sometimes. the other is definatly aptasia.

whoa now, that seems like a pretty vast statement... why would say, a porcelain crab be bad?? i like mine a lot, they're cool filter feeders :) decorator crabs are reef safe i'm pretty sure, mithrax crabs...

If you can just take out the crab and put him in a small container and take a picture of him. Then just make an ID thread in the invert section or something and I'm sure plenty of people will tell you everything about that crab. But its hard to tell without a better picture.

Also if you have aiptasia your peppermint should get rid of it. I have one peppermint that I caught in the wild here in my BC and never have any aiptasia.

I think what stonepilot was getting at is all crabs are oppertunistic ( did I spell that right?) and will try to catch fish if big enough or even eat coral if hungry enough.

I would have kept that green macro algae btw. i think that is a type that i have been looking for locally to put in my tank. maybe i just go to the wrong places, but there never is any decorative macro algae at LFS around me

Porcelain crabs are a rare exception being filter feeders, but most crabs, especially a decorator crab, can wreak havoc on a reef tank. I stopped putting hermits in my tanks, and found my snails don't need replacing every 6 months. Some crabs are just too cool or funny to ignore, so you have to weigh the trouble they will eventually cause against the pleasure they provide, and if it is worth it to you, have all the crabs you want.

hmmm... how does one go about taking the crab out of the tank??

*opportunistic :) how big do you think is too big?? i think right now mine are all too small, the biggest one by far is the red mithrax one and his body is maybe an inch in diameter(not counting the legs and claws). the rest are at least two times smaller than him.

ohh hydro i wanted to keep it!! unfortunately something ate it :(

overall, would you say they only do damage to coral? i'm not planning on putting any in there for a while, but how big do you think a crab would have to be to eat say, an inch long clown?

hmmm... how does one go about taking the crab out of the tank??

Well if you even find him away from the rock just pick him up with a net. Or just make some kind of trap and put food in it. There's tons of different ways just search it on here. It would probably be best to get him out in case he will eat your corals or something.

wrong ocean...

wrong ocean...

all crabs are bad, the safest is the emerald and they go rouge sometimes. the other is definatly aptasia.

Sorry, wrong ocean for aptasia......we do have many look alike anemones in the gulf of Mexico, but no aptasia...

and crabs?...crabs will be crabs...remember, this is the ocean, and everything eats everything else!

Rule of thumb is, if he does something you do not like, he needs a new home, porcelain crabs are not a threat....

the best way and cheapest is a glass coke bottle, drop some food in the bottom lean against rock at night and she will slide down in to get food and not be able to get out. your crab is probably some type of mud crab and will eventually eat everything it can get a hold of. good luck.

thanks a bunch for all the input guys :)

OH MAN! so today i received the rest of my live rock from tbs, and it is soooooooooooo awesome :inlove:

so awesome i spent the next 6 hours hopping around my tank getting everything in there haha!

so needless to say i took tons of pictures (but my camera broke again shortly), out of all the creatures i now have:
- bunch of snails
- peppermint shrimp
- 2 sea stars (1 serpent, 1 other kind)
- sea cucumber
- tiny little goby (white with black stripes, super adorable)
- anemone!!!! maybe even 2 because i'm not sure what the other thing is....
- 3 gorgonians
- bunch of sponges
- blue leg hermit crabs
i'm sure i forgot some, but this stuff rocks so check it out :)
