Great tank !! Things are really looking great! That Live rock is pretty unreal, looks like 100's of years of life on it!!!
Love the star, I had a chocolate chip star in my previous setup, I would watch it for hours as it slowly moved all of its "feet" along the glass!!! Have you seen it feed along the glass?

Keep up the good work!

thanks everyone!!! :D

the star is sooo much fun to watch, but surprisingly i like my serpent sea star better for it's character... funny story!

today i was watching my tank and saw 4/5 serpent star legs in between the middle rocks blocking the edges... i got curious, and then watched it have a brawl with a gorilla crab, apparently it's sitting there and not letting them come out, i was totally rooting for the sea star, i have yet to get the crabs out of the tank with my trap, maybe it'll eat them? :hmm2:... would an lfs really take in gorilla crabs? how should i dispose of them??

Congrats on your first full month! Your water looks crystal clear :)

hehe i think it might be because i went ahead and changed my chemipure again just in case it was getting worn out from the first month's cycle and everything, and it has like, special water clearing stuff in it :)

Wow naughty, great tank........im still debating going the nano cube route as opposed to a 20 or 30 g plumbed w the bean animal overflow and a sump/ref below.....im still putting together a parts list and trying to compare the 2
the live rock is amazing...i checked out the TBS site and while the prices are pretty good the shipping costs to ny frighten me.....unless i read it wrong its at least $100 plus other charges the airlines will charge? and i would have to go to JFK or whatever airport they ship too in order to pick it up?

hmmm well it's about a dollar per pound for shipping or something like that, i paid about 120 bucks in shipping total but with all the extras i got i'm pretty sure it was still a great deal.

and i know, going to the airport is scary, but it's a pretty sweet adventure, i had no problems at all, checked the website, called the people to check that my package was there, called them two more times when i got lost cause i looked it up wrong (there's gotta be a gene for sucking at directions on the x-chromosome) :spin2: and then finally got there, got the boys to help me load it into the car, paid shipping and left. not as hard as it sounds :p

How is the tank doing? Have you bought any fish yet? I am still cycling. Richard sends a lot of rock. I am thinking about moving some rock around, maybe splitting some. Cant get to the serpent star. LOL

LOL! You don't "get" to the serpent star, it comes out when it darn well feels like it! Splitting rocks to get to it only will result in broken rocks and a serpent star living in the next most convenient hiding place on your rockwork!

wise old reef guy......

wise old reef guy......

That is the thing, its legs are all over the place. I need to make a better cave for it.

confucius says...

critters do as they want too.....best just to watch!

Actually, serpents and brittles like to wave their hands around, and when a piece of food lands on them, they curl it up and eat it. That way they only lose a limb if something is eating them. All my mini brittles hand out their legs. It's no problem for them.

Aaron

Alright I wont move the rock. It looked all smushed, but it did move to a different hole in the tank. up higher.

serpents/brittles are curious creatures. I have 3 mini brittles in my tank (that I know of...) and honestly have only ever seen each of them once, the first came out and wandered my aquascaping after my hands were out of the water and i watched him scale the mountain for a few minutes looking for a good place. The other 2, funny story, actually BOTH came on a candycane frag I bought! One had 3 1/2 legs, the other a full 5. It was just a branch break frag, not on a plug, so my best guess is they were hiding out in a nook on the stalk.

whoa! looks like i missed a whole conversation over here :)

the tank is doing quite well, all the critters seem to be happy, my nitrates are refusing to go down though... they're staying so far at around 40 pretty consistently, but i'm doing water changes every few days and bought the LED nano glo or w/e for my chaeto so hopefully soon it'll start growing a bit more and consuming more of those nitrates.

no more fish yet, since the params aren't good enough...

hehe my serpent star is quite the *star* of the tank. i've been feeding the tank pretty scarcely since i'd like the nitrates to go down.. but i figure my anemones need to eat, and everything else can get scraps or whatever. well, i think the star may be catching the mini gorilla crabs in there that i fail at fishing out, so i'm super stoked about that, but they're harder to catch than snatching a juicy piece of shrimp from my condy... they got in a brawl. so of course i fed the star too, and i guess the piece may have been too big cause it had a distorted head for a couple hours :p.

then i went to feed my flower anemone and apparently the shrimp was wanting a piece of that because it started picking at it, so i gave it a piece too: i think watching a shrimp eat is like the coolest thing, it was soooo protective of its piece too :p. good thing there's enough copepods for the goby to hunt all day :).

anyway, i can type about my tank forever.... :crazy1:

OH!
almost forgot. i now know i have at least two mantis shrimp in there, and one of them has a sweet looking big green claw :p... gonna try to set the trap up tonight and see if i can catch anything! :)

You should continue to make water changes until Nitrates go down. To prevent them from building up, you may want to see if there is a good nano protein skimmer you can run on your tank. I've heard some people say bio pellets have helped reduce their nitrates.

stick 'em up!

stick 'em up!
