Neal's Barebottom SPS & ZOA System...

ya definatly a labor of love u got going there ... I see u have the addiction ..r u going to be alright or do u think you will end up in rehab one of these day , does the betty ford have a reef rehab ..lol..good job my friend . keep up the nice work and awsome threads , how long have u been in the hobby ?

since april of 2006... got a freshwater tank (in march)... have had them as a child growing up...

setup up a reef which was to be softie and ended up killing a few lps... like frogspawn, pogada cup to name a couple... softies never did too well, but didnt die... had some nice rock and critters though, even had (2) of the 48" 265 watt Coralife power compact fixtures... it was a 120 footprint, but was 3" lower so it was about 100g's... unfortunately i knew nothing of RC or even had internet, so all my knowledge initially was from some not so good, but decent, LFS... i had the proper setup as far as some idea of what kind of gear you needed... a cheap seaclone skimmer, good but really jus ok lighting PC's, a sump with fuge and cheato (now the stuff jus dies cuz of no nutrients) and ok flow... unfortunately i didnt understand nutrient levels like nitrates and elementals like alk especially... dosed blindly basically and jus didnt do well... but i had some nice fish, that if I got them healthy, they did really well, especially a chocolate tang, which i want another of to go with the purple and a few other fish that did well... but again, my lack of husbandry knowledge, and LACK OF PROPER OR ANY QT, ultimately killed all but the hardiest... but alot of times i would go through fish alot as i would get them, but then trade them in for whatever reason or another... so they didnt all die, like it was awful or anything... but i jus didnt know enough, and things didnt work out, and i moved to fish and inverts/fish only systems for a few years...

Setting up my 150g standard i had before i moved back east from Cali, which was setup in october 2008 until march of 09, did i even start to do things somewhat "properly"... as that is when i bought the skimmer i have now...and "Sploke" jus picked up the Oceanrunner 6500 i had for it as well lol... anyhow, i moved across country, and was without a tank for a year until april of last year 2010... which was the 40 breeder that now makes up my sump... and this is when i started keeping and learning about sps and really keeping a system as a much more serious, time consuming hobby... but to be honest, its exactly the kind of thing for me... i can definately see myself doing this in 10, 20 and 30 years down the road... and with any luck, and ALOT of hard work, diligence, and dedication, as well as having a life outside of the hobby (sort of lol), it will jus get bigger, better, and more beautiful in every aspect of this hobby, and every meaning of the word... especially for keeping coral :)

awesome build man, tagging along

ziyaadb, you are the fist person to openly express interest in any of my systems ever here on RC who is from outside the US... thank you so very much, that is very awesome... alot fo people in the other parts of the world have much more patience than us american (imo) and have some incrdible systems... there are some amazing fish and corals in the oceans surrounding africa, which must also be amazing... thank you, for the kind words...

Ah man your set-up rocks. Have some of those disks, going to frag my zoas and try your tower style, so cool.

Also loving your SPS frags on the back and side of your tank, must try it. 2 thumbs up.

Cheers

Pallobi only a pleasure man, I love the way u set out purely to grow out the sps. I have showed it on our local forums and have had mixed reviews.
yes we have some awesome reefs here in SA but with the Sea 6 hours away its not very often that i visit.

Good luck with the tank i will drop in when ever u update the thread

i need somewhere to put them lol... and thank you much as well... i hope to have a 120 setup here in the next month or two in place of the 75, so i will have more space to grow out, and fit more goodies...

Icycoral had a great idea today at my house, since i may not have a huge system any time soon, i could jus knock off a good frag to keep for myself when things get too big for my system, and find a good home for the colony i grew... this would allow to to keep the coral species, and spread the wealth.... knock off a good frag for me with some nice tips to grow faster... one good example fo this and one that could probably use it soon, is the FHI green highlighter acro i have... so who knows... good idea though for someone with restricted space and wants to keep alot, but healthy, corals...

again seabass, thank you for the kind words as well...

i really glad to get good feedback from my "vision"... at some point, those racks wont be in there, and i hope to have a large, shallow, and wide tank and have jus one awesome spread of sps and zoa/paly towers with a few select fish swimming amongst the heavy flow... it will happen, i promise you all ;)

lol... again though, thank you guys, your interest and shared passions fuel my own... and that is awesome... its why we are all here sharing and conversing on RC!

Picked up this little trio of captive bred Banggai Cardinals last nite :) here they are jus chillen in bag, in my fuge before hitten QT for a bit... I got 3 so it would be a better chance of a pair as they mature...once they pair up, the 3rd will be removed...

Do you have a sock in your sump from the main display?

i do not... i have quite a bit of flow going through my sump and not too much settles, i have 2 spots that accumulate a bit, but this setup has been up for nearly 2 months, and i have cleaned those spots at all and there isnt much too speak of as far as how much has built up... barely anything

ok, so i have some bad news... unfortunately my mandarin didnt make the weekend... not sure what happened... he seemed fine the first day, and not the last two... i tried... feel for the little guy, as losing him was not anything i thought would happen as i have lots of food, and he was fat and healthy looking... looked at himn closely, and he had something goin on under his chin between his gills... i really examined him before purchase and he looked well... guess the last transition, coupled with some sort of un-showing ailment took him... im not sure ill try another anytime soon... the ORA i would consider... but we will see what happens...

on a better note... i got my new 65g RR "fuge",plumbed in and setup, while transerring my rock, sand and critters from my old 40g "fuge"...

I am really gonna like it... i was able to actually do a little creative aquascaping... not sure i like it but its a start... had one rock left, so i jus put that in my sump for now... I hope to get some better lights for it... something T5, but not alot of light, maybe a (4) bulb, 24" Teklight... that would be cool, jus for some nice color, and so the rocks will grow in better and whatnot... this will be a fish/invert "fuge"... i only call it a "fuge" because it is the necessary bio filter with rock and sand that my system requires... i will be adding a decent wavemaker/powerhead of some kind to get some good flow in there... probably a Koralia 6 placed up under the return in the back left of the tank, so it wont be very visible, but very effective for getting water flow and oxygen to the bottom and around the rock structures...

as far as critters, i placed my Bangaii's in already... they were captive bred, in an isolated system, so im confident they are good... i also have my Coral Beauty Angel, along with a small sand conch, my fancy brittle star, and a pencil urchin... i will be adding at least a couple more urchins for algae control as well... i love urchins and there are awesome looking in my opinion, and there is a few real nice ones.... they would be a cool invert to collect... due to the use of this tank, and lack of space, i will not be setting up the invert display i talked of recently, or at least not in the near future... this side tank will tank the place of that... with some of my most desired inverts... i still have my purple reef lobster, but he now has a nice darkened home in the 65g's overflow :) and the arrow crab at the moment is enclosed in my sump... i will most likely find him a new home... i would like to keep him, but he may eat my baby bangaii's and we cant have that... i will make sure, the best i can anyway, that this side tank, and its inhabitants, will be 100% safe, and without anything that may prey on them...

I also plan on adding along with a couple more urchins, 3 or 4 fire shrimp, a harem of sexy shrimp, some nassurus snails (as my arrow crab ate them), a couple different other easy to keep star fish... as well as a couple small fish, perhaps a basslet of some kind... i really like blackcap gramma and have never had one, or yellow assessor... and i really love african flameback angels, and have never had one of them either... so i have a few options ;)

i still need to put the shelf back up and relocate the smaller shelf above that is still there, but ill do some work on it tomorrow and square things up a bit more, and the light... but you get the idea :)

btw, its a little cloudy from the work also, so please mind that...

Sorry to hear about your mandarin. I had a similar experience with a wild caught. I got a hold of a male green spotted mandarin from ORA's first batch last year. It's doing very well! It loves Spectrum pellets (since the first week I had it). Yes, definitely pick up an ORA mandarin!

Anyway, I found your tank in the minimalist thread and was very impressed. I am also one of those who like a more organized and clean look. I went bare bottom last year on my Elos 70 (55g), but I don't have a big enough sump or room for another tank to house the LR. Thus, I have LR on my DT. I have been experimenting in ways of organizing my frags. I like your Lowe's ceramic tile idea! I've been seeing a lot of bb tanks with zoas, montis, and other coral "carpets" growing on the floor. Not a great idea when one has to move the tank. I'm liking the tile idea for bb coverage. I'm thinking of "tiling" my bottom starting with some frags of my Purple Haze, Tri-Color, and Sunset montis.

Thanks for the inspiration...

so since i had a good part of my system changed up a bit yesterday and added a good amount of new water (30 gallons), i thought it would be a good idea to check my water parameters, including the ones i dont check often...

Cal - 450

Alk - 8

Phos - 0.00 to 0.03, definitely closer to 0.00

Mag - 1400 (+/- 10)

Nitrates - 0

Ph - who cares, i never check this... ;)

so everything looks great imo...

the display upgrade and thoughts...

the display upgrade and thoughts...

So i was able to pickup the standard 120g that i previously mentioned a couple days back...

i had the oppurtunity to obtain a peninsula style 120g w/ a glass overflow already installed with 2 already drilled holes in the bottom of the overflow, made to fit (2) 1" bulkheads... however i opted for the standard uncut and undrilled tank so i may set it up custom myself... since i had the option between the 2...

my plans for the standard 120g i got are as follows...

It will also be setup peninsula style for the ability to view both the long sides and a 3rd viewing panel being the short side without the planned overflow... the overflow, will be lower a couple inches as i dont want the water to be 23" deep... i want it to be about 21" max... the overflow will be made of clear glass and will be visible through to the pipes enclosed... it will also not run the height of the tank to the planned water level... it will only be about 7" high, but wil come with 4" of each long side, makingabout 7" tall by 15" long, and will be about 4" wide... i want to have it so i can still place 1 or my 2 mp40s at the end of the tank, jus like i have them setup in my 75g presently... I do not want to compromise my positioning of the vortechs whatsoever, as if you use 2 vortechs, this is how they work best in conjunction with each other... and the undertow affect is best in this manner imo... so the vortech will sit a couple inches below the bottom of the planned overflow... it will also have two return inlets... one on each side of said overflow, in each respected corner, as close to the top of the tank as i can get them... they will each fit a 3/4" bulkhead, and there will be (2) 1" bulkhead drain inside the overflow...

I am really in no rush to do this as my corals have been through alot the last few months, and especially alot of my newer "higher end" corals which are still recovering from their last transition... so i will take my time... i will put the tank in the garage for a bit, give it a acid bath to thoroughly clean it, and then give it a fresh water leak test for a few days... i will then map out and drill said returns and drains, and then have some glass cut to make the overflow myself... and of course a couple days to cure the silicone... and then and only then, whenever that may be, will i begin to consider the tank replacement of my 75g...

my plans for that procedure are still up in the air... i really want to make it as simple as possible and as least stressful on my corals as possible... i will most likely setup a small tank to the right of my "fuge" and jus setup another sump infront of the "fuge" and relocate the sumps gear to the temporary sump, and the temporary "display" this way i can remove the entire stand and remake it, and reconfigure a few things... my hopes is to have the 120 setup peninsula style to the far left, on a much lower stand, and have the sump the the left of that, and to the right of the "fuge" so it sits right in the middle of the both of them, for much easier access... i also want the stand to be lower so i can reach in and out easily, and remove the corals and their column stands much more easily... however the sump will be enclosed in its own "cabinet" to keep anything from happening, since we often have little ones around, and we know how they can get curious :)

jus some of the thoughts i have so far

A few more growth shots and time frames...

A few more growth shots and time frames...

the older pics are all about 1 month after acquiring the frag, so they have all grown a bit at that point... All of the older pics are from the same time, back in October of 2010... so these pics are about 6 months worth of growth...

also, all of my pics in the next few post were taken with my Droid camera phone, as are almost all in my thread to this point...

ORA Joe the Coral... originally from DLandino's tank...
