I've had fish for a long time, but I've never before had a lot of rockwork. Now I have a 29gal that is about half full of rock, with some button polyps, zoos, and clove polyps. All came on rock I bought for the rock or the algae. Some are thriving and spreading, some are not doing well.
This is my kid's tank, and the fish are the main attraction. He has a false perc, a yellow watchman, and, until today, a royal gramma.
The yellow watchman comes out if no one is in the room, but quickly ducks in a hole if there is movement. The clown is mean to fingers during maintenance, but while he's occasionally chased the other fish, I've never seen him pursue them. The royal gramma was a favorite. It has a decent personality, investigates, and ducks in and out of holes we can hardly tell are even there. Today he was laying on his side, breathing, listless when I tried to catch him, and swimming erratically. Everyone else is fine. Water is fine. And he looked good and lively yesterday. Did a partial water change anyway since I'd upset everything pretty well trying to get to the royal gramma.
Previously, I would have removed sick fish before it died. I tried to get him, but in all that rock, he's got himself in somewhere and I can't get him out.

Do you generally just let the crabs take care of dead fish in a rocky aquarium and watch the ammonia?

My rocks are pretty well supported and are not on sand. I'm guessing he got into it with the clown or ran in to a rock too hard. I can't see any damage, but I didn't get a good look.

How many crabs are in the tank? Any shrimp? They'll make short work of even a large royal gramma. I wouldn't be worried about it polluting the tank. You have plenty of live rock anyway.
