need a new light setup for my NC24

does anyone know if I could do a retro 150w MH into the canopy w/o melting it? my PC lighting and ballast died and i need to setup something new but debating the cost. any info would be great. I would like to keep the hood since I don't want to go open top.

You'd need a glass shield for the UV with the 150 since it's double ended. Sockets plus shield, I'd say at least 3 inches. Also if you enclose that on your cube it'll probably be too much heat. I doubt you could fit it without making a new hood. Check out funman1 (steve's) diy ballast from those spiral florescent bulbs. I think it's small enough that you could actually fit the ballast in the hood.

one of em come with a MH light, otherwise you could hack in a viper or coralife into the top.....currently I am going topless with one using the viper(via Karl), I put to MJ900s through the baffles and plan on putting some chaeto in the there sometime, I may fab a clear or smoked cover eventually or a fully enclosed piece just for the back with an incorporated light for the chaeto.......going topless is the easiest way.......big heat issues otherwise......you may fab a top out of acrylic if the kiddies are going to be a concern, but watch how close you put the light to it.....it will burn.....
