need a sump

hey, does anyone have a sump that they're not using? I would like to get one thats got baffles and everything already. I'm lookin for anything from 10 gallons to maybe 30...but 30 prolly is the biggest that would fit under my tank..i'll have to measure..but its a 40 breeder and there's nothing else under the stand..its all open..so it should be enough for quite a bit...

anyways, let me know if you've got a sump that you're not using anymore

thanks
mike

that would be great if you can help. and that comes w/the baffles? and i would just need to silicone/whatever them on there? or is there already like a slot that they just slide into?

my reason for wanting a premade one is so that i dont have to get any glass cut (unless its by far cheaper)...if i had glass/accrylic that i could cut then i'd just do that and put them in a 10 gallon tank that i have...
but i dont have anything to cut glass or accrylic, and have no experience cutting the stuf (i'd prolly shatter it lol), so i'd rather just buy one from someone or somewhere like atr if it would be cheaper than getting some glass or accrylic and getting it cut.

actually now i think of it, i do have a piece of glass that used to be a door on a tv stand lol...i had actually used it at one time to make a tank out of it and an old toy box lol...but i have no clue if its tempered or whatever so i dont know how/if it could be cut..

so let me know if you've got a sump.

thanks
mike

Cut glass is cheap. A 9x12" piece at Ace is like $2.50. I just had 3 of them cut. The tank to be used as a sump is the expensive part, and that's still not much if it's only a 30 gallon.

It is just a tank. I get sheets of acrylic from HD to make my baffles. I am already making a 29g sump for a friend. If you want to learn and make yours at the same time just LMK. Its easy to do.

wait so let me get this right you can go to ace and have them cut you a piece of glass any size you want and they can do it and the 2,50 is that just for cutting a piece you already have or is that to buy a piece that size from them

my thoughts exactly lol... so i could just go to ace or whatever and find a piece of glass that is the right size for that cheap? i'll prolly do that.

then if jay could just help me out w/glueing it and everything that'd be great. I'm thinking of just doing it w/a 10 gallon tank now, since i've already got one, and then just getting the baffles...i'm not doing a fuge in it...just a place for skimmer and heater...(may put a hang on fuge on it but prolly not..)

and does it matter that i dont know what size my skimmer will be yet? I havent even started lookin for one, but i know it will be an in sump one...

and jay...would all i need to build it be the sheets of accrylic or glass, and then some silicone?

thanks all
mike

I used some UV cured glass adhesive from HD. It's like super glue, but you apply it in the shade, then move it to the sun and it sets solid in like 4 minutes. After that I ran a bead of silicone.

10 gallons does not give you much room, especially for an in sump skimmer. Try to go as big as you can under your stand. I was pressed for space with a 20H as a sump.

ya i know the 10 doesnt give much room...i'm not adding it for additional water volume..just a place for a skimmer and heater..is that still too small?

if thats too small to put a skimmer in, then i'd have to get another bigger tank to go under than what i have, at which point i'd rather just get a pre made one...unless someone's got an old tank that they can just throw away..(well...not throw away but give to me or give for really cheap)

Yes, also get your skimmer first so you know it will fit.

If you us a 10g you risk it overflowing every time your pump turns off. I would go bigger and make the fudge part of the sump. If you are thinking of doing a fudge later, just save the time and money and do it now. It is very cheap to do.

29g- $29
acrylic- $20
sylicone- $5
Me- priceless

total: $54

I am already making a 29g sump for a friend, so it will be very easy.

ya there wouldnt be much room for error i know...and is it possible to do a sump w/out baffles? they're mainly for bubbles right? I probably wont do that, but just wondering...and i dont really have the money to get my skimmer right now...i wont be getting this thing up and running for a while probably, but i want to get the sump made so i can set it all up, and then just add the skimmer when i get it....because i could get it all set up and put the live rock and stuff in there and not need a skimmer for a while right? i woudlnt add fish till i get the skimmer i dont think...altho i had fish and rock before i got my remora on my 55 w/no problems..just had to do more water changes...

so does anyone have a tank that is 15-30 gal, that they can let go?

jay..lol love the "priceless" part. thats one of the best things about meeting other people in the hobby..you get to learn a ton of stuff (and get a ton of stuff too) for free :)

also, do you know how many baffles i will need? I have got a 20 gal tank but thats being used for my brothers baby turtles and i dont have anything else to put them in (actually, i need to get somethign bigger for them...we had kiddy pools for them, but the dogs dont leave it be lol...dang dogs!!)

I wouldn't add any livestock untile you get a skimmer. Also your live rock will cure slower w/out one. I have a Coralife Super Skimmer 65 for $50 if you want it. It seaps a little water around the adjustment nob, so it will only work in sump unless you send it back to Coralife to fix the nob.

hmmm....! thats something i'm really gonna take into consideration (the skimmer). I know i dont wanna add any livestock till i get the skimmer, but on my other tank it was all fine while i didnt have a skimmer (i had started off doing just a FO tank...finished the cycle w/a fluval...once it was done added cured live rock lol...then fish, then about a month ago i added a remora)

but is that skimmer working fine other than the leak? like does it still skim and everything? i'll most likely get it if it still works, since it will just be an in sump one anyways. (and does that have the pump and everything on it?

thanks
mike

Works good. I bought it used about 8 months ago. I only used it a couple of times to cure live rock and on a tank for about 2 months. The leak is very minnor and only does it once in a while. I can't figure out why.

cool i'll tell my dad...since its a skimmer for that cheap he'll prolly let me get it, or if we cant now, hopefully you'll still have it later..
this was the skimmer that i was actually thinking about getting for this tank...i think that would be a good skimmer for 40 gallons...so the water would just drip down the thing and back in to the sump wter right?

so would i just need a sump tank just big enough to make a comparment for it and the intake and return pump areas?

i use a 10 gal sump and a 20gal fuge i have tried to find something bigger that will fit but i am pressed for room got the skimmer calcium reactor and the two small tanks under the 90gal stand how you would be surprise i had to arrange and rearrange countless times wish a couls go bigger for the sump but it has to be the same footpriont as the ten is which is 20x10 and a 18(20x10x20) would be ok but i can not find one for the life of me anywhere i really wish they had something like 20x10x16 or 22x10x16 might just have to do some custom work
